The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals are both fighting for playoff positioning in a jumbled mess of a National League Playoff picture and both are looking for a win in Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (-120, 8)
Jared Jones gets the pitching start for the Pirates, who has a 3.66 ERA with 9.7 strikeouts and 2.6 walks per nine innings but has been better at home with his ERA dipping to 2.20 in Pittsburgh.
On the other end, the Cardinals are 7-3 in the past 10 starts Miles Mikolas has made, though it hasn’t necessarily been lights-out pitching that has generated these wins.
Mikolas owns a 5.32 ERA with having allowed 10 runs, nine of which were earned, in his last start and though he keeps his amount of walks allowed down at 1.7 walks per nine innings, he’s also only getting 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings.
Road woes are also a problem for the Cardinals offense with the team entering the series 26th in the league in road scoring with just under 3.9 runs per game while the Pirates are 23rd in the league in scoring with four runs per game.
With both offenses being comparable, the Pirates getting the pitching that they are from Jones at home will be the difference and be what gets Pittsburgh into the winner’s circle on Wednesday.
