Group D at Copa America 2024 might seem like a race between South American heavyweights Brazil and Colombia, but Paraguay and Costa Rica have shown they are more than capable of making things interesting in a major tournament. Given Brazil’s inconsistent form and Colombia’s propensity to underachieve in big competitions, this group could actually be more open than the odds suggest.

My pick as Group D winner got off to a strong start against Paraguay with two goals in the first half. Jefferson Lerma’s header withstood a review and would ultimately prove to be the difference, as Paraguay found a goal in the second half thanks to a great run and tap-in from Julio Enciso. Colombia could’ve gotten a third goal but a potential penalty was overturned. Eventually, Colombia was able to see the game out and secure three points in Group D.
Brazil 0, Costa Rica 0
It didn’t take long for the upsets to start happening in Copa America. Brazil was a heavy favorite in this game but simply could not find the back of the net. VAR ruled one goal offside but Brazil should’ve done better with the massive advantage it created in this game. Costa Rica comes away with a crucial point, while Brazil will go back to the drawing board after an underwhelming result despite dominating.
Colombia 3, Costa Rica 0
Colombia continues to look like the team to beat at Copa America 2024, dominating an inferior Costa Rica side from start to finish in convincing fashion. Luis Diaz found the back of the net on a penalty to get his Copa campaign started, with Davinson Sanchez and Jhon Cordoba adding second-half goals for a 3-0 scoreline.
Brazil 4, Paraguay 1
Vinicius Junior found the back of the net twice in the first half to bracket a Savio goal, giving Brazil a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime. Paraguay would add a goal quickly to start the second half but Lucas Paqueta converted a penalty in what was a resounding victory for Brazil.
Costa Rica 2, Paraguay 1
Paraguay dominated this game statistically but both of Costa Rica’s shots found the back of the net within the first 10 minutes. The Central American side didn’t have to do anything after that and just defended the goal, allowing one in the second half but ultimately getting three points. Costa Rica had a slim shot of advancing but likely just mailed it in after getting ahead early.
Brazil 1, Colombia 1
Raphinha got the scoring in this one on a brilliant free kick and it looked like Brazil would be the first team to hand Colombia a loss in its last 10 international matches. Colombia still remains unbeaten in international play over the last one and a half years. Both teams have advanced to the quarterfinal round with Colombia winning the group.
