South American soccer titans clash Tuesday night as Brazil and Colombia face off in Group D at Copa America 2024. Colombia has already clinched a spot in the knockout round with two victories in two games, while Brazil is in a great position to advance thanks to goal differential in the win over Paraguay. A draw sends both teams through, while a Brazil loss will still see Selecao advance as long as Costa Rica does not beat Panama while also overcoming what is currently a six-goal difference.

Both these sides came into Copa America 2024 with a stellar record this year. After losing three World Cup qualifier matches to end 2023, Brazil went 2-2-0 with wins over England and Mexico in the lead-up to this tournament. Colombia has been unbeaten over the last two years so far in international matches and has won its last 10 international matches entering Tuesday’s game. Part of that run included a 2-1 win over Brazil late in 2023 in World Cup qualifying action.
Card accumulation could be an issue for Brazil, with Vinicius Junior, Eder Militao, Lucas Paqueta and Wendell all in danger with one yellow card. It’s possible these players are taken off early or kept on the bench to start this match. James Rodriguez was taken off early in Colombia’s last match but that was later deemed to be only precautionary. We’ll see if he starts. Defender Jhon Lucumi missed the Costa Rica game after suffering an injury against Paraguay but the setback isn’t expected to cost him the tournament. He could return in this encounter.
Even though Brazil is coming off a dominant showing against Paraguay, I think Colombia keeps its insane run in international play going with a win. Brazil should still advance barring some insanity from Costa Rica but I think the Selecao fall short in this one.
