Novak Djokovic has won four of the last five men’s Wimbledon titles. His track record in London is incredible. So, why would I highlight a play for his opponent in Tuesday’s match?

Well, when you dive into Novak’s history in the opening round of this tournament, a notable trend stands out.

While the 37-year-old has been nothing short of dominant on the largest stage in tennis, he can take a while to ramp up to championship form in these grand slams.

That’s reflected in his recent first-round history in London. Dating back to 2019, Djokovic has allowed his opponents to win at least 10 games in four-straight opening round matches at Wimbledon, dropping a set in two of said contests.

It’s also worth noting that Djokovic’s health is a huge question mark entering this tournament. The superstar underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus less than a month ago, and while he claims to be 100%, that feels highly unlikely. As a result of Novak’s injury, he wasn’t able to rack up any reps on grass in a tune-up tournament, so Tuesday will be the first time he plays an official match on this surface in 2024.

All of that said, winning 10 games against Novak Djokovic is much easier said than done, so his opponent’s form matters. Luckily for Kopriva, he’s entering this match on a high note, earning a tournament bid through a qualification run that included an impressive victory over Richard Gasquet. He’s trending in the right direction, while Djokovic appears to be vulnerable, at least to the extent where dropping 10 games is quite feasible.
