The best tournament in tennis is back.
Well, nearly. On Monday, July 1, Wimbledon first-round action commences in London.

Carlos Alcaraz (+225)
For the first time since 2019, someone not named Novak Djokovic will enter Wimbledon as the defending champion.
It’s only fitting that Carlos Alcaraz — the man who boasts that honor — had to go through Djokovic to earn it last year, winning a five-set thriller to hoist the trophy seen above.
Now, I’m expecting him to do it again.
Alcaraz isn’t actually the favorite to win this tournament, which may come as a surprise to some. That title was given to Jannik Sinner, who claimed the No. 1 spot in the world rankings following Roland Garros. Sinner has been fantastic this year, winning his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. He also boasts a 5-0 record on grass in 2024 after winning the Halle Open.
Alcaraz bowed out in the second round of his only grass-court tourney to Jack Draper, but I’m not concerned about that result considering the context. The 21-year-old was fresh off a grueling French Open campaign, in which he beat Sinner in the semi-final en route to the championship.
That’s something he will likely have to do again in London, as these two are on the same side of the draw. Alcaraz has won each of their meetings in 2024, and his experience on grass would give him a legitimate edge heading into a semi-final clash this time around.
Now, I’ve barely touched on the man who won four of the last five Wimbledons in Djokovic, but that’s for good reason. While he has a clear path to the final on paper, his health is a serious question mark. Novak was forced to withdraw from Roland Garros after tearing his meniscus and will now attempt to play less than a month after surgery.
He will certainly not be 100% for this tournament, and he also hasn’t been able to rack up any real run on grass this year outside of practice. For those reasons, I don’t have faith that we’ll see a deep run from Novak in London.
As a result, that means the winner of a likely semi-final between Alcaraz and Sinner would be the clear favorite to clinch another Grand Slam title, and I’m rolling with the defending champion.
