The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to expand cricket beyond its traditional playing nations, with the United States serving as a co-host for the tournament with the West Indies as the field expands to 20 teams. This is more reflective of the global reach of the sport after numerous World Cups with 10 teams. Even though the last two T20 World Cups have each had 16 teams, the format was not conducive to showcasing all of these teams on a broader stage. That will change substantially in 2024.
The 20 teams are first divided into four groups of five teams. All the teams will play each other in their respective groups, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the Super 8 stage. These eight teams are placed in two groups of four teams each, with the same round-robin format as the first group stage. The teams have been pre-seeded from the group stage and will remain in that spot if they advance. For example, India was the pre-seeded A1 and will be A1 as long as they advance to the Super 8 even if they don’t win Group A.
The top two teams in each Super 8 group will advance to the knockout round, which will consist of two semifinals and one final.
