Euro 2024 play officially kicked off with Group A, as hosts Germany and Scotland got the competition underway with the first match. Hungary and Switzerland round out the group, which will automatically send the top two teams to the knockout round. There’s a chance the team which finishes in third place will also advance, but that will only be determined once all the other third-place teams are set.

The hosts wasted no time getting on the board in the tournament opener, making a big statement. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala got the scoring going before a Kai Havertz penalty late in the first half made it 3-0. Substitutes Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can a second-half goals for Germany. Scotland went down to 10 men late in the first half and were never able to recover, with an own goal from Antonio Rudiger providing some minor relief in an otherwise forgettable effort.
Switzerland 3, Hungary 1
Switzerland struck early in this contest thanks to a 12th-minute goal from forward Kwadwo Duah and doubled their advantage just before halftime. Hungary got back into the game in the 66th minute courtesy of a goal from Barnabas Varga but Breel Embolo’s score in stoppage time sealed a quality win for the Swiss side.
Germany 2, Hungary 0
This was a clinical performance from the host country from start to finish, with a win likely giving Germany enough to move to the knockout round. Jamal Musiala got the scoring going in the 22nd minute, and Ilkay Gundogan added an insurance goal in the second half. Hungary looked overmatched across the board and will now need a win in the final match to have a shot at qualification, along with some help from other groups.
Scotland 1, Switzerland 1
Scotland got on the board first thanks to a brilliant counterattack, ending with Scott McTominay’s shot finding the back of the net after taking a deflection from a Swiss defender. It took an insane strike for Xherdan Shaqiri to put Switzerland on level terms shortly after but there wasn’t much action for the rest of the match as both sides looked to see out the draw. Switzerland are in the better position to secure an automatic knockout spot but Scotland have hope to advance after getting a crucial point Wednesday.
Switzerland 1, Germany 1
The underdogs got a big boost early in this contest with Dan Ndoye finding the back of the net in the first half. Switzerland nearly took a 2-0 but VAR ruled Ruben Vargas offside. Manuel Neuer made a good stop and it proved to be crucial as Niclas Fullkrug’s header in stoppage time secured a draw and the top spot in the group for Germany. Both Germany and Switzerland have qualified for the knockout round as a result of the draw.
Hungary 1, Scotland 0
Hungary created most of the chances in this game despite not having more possession, as Scotland only had two total shots. There were no goals until late in stoppage time, which went long due to a massive injury to Barnabas Varga. Hungary ultimately got on the board thanks to a goal from Kevin Csoboth and will now wait for the remaining third-place teams across the group stage to see if it can win the tiebreaker. Scotland has been eliminated.
