Copa America 2024 will get underway Thursday evening with the reigning champions Argentina taking on Canada in the opening match. Argentina have won their last two major international tournaments and will look to continue their stellar run, while Canada will attempt to channel some of the same energy which got them a 0-0 draw with France in their last international friendly.

The big boys are back for the tail end of what ends up being a glorious period in Argentina’s soccer history. Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria are the experienced old heads who have built the foundation for this run but it’ll be players like Lautaro Martinez, Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez and Alexis Mac Allister who will determine how long it continues. Canada might have gotten a draw in the last match but the overall form for Jesse Marsch’s side is not good. After a stellar run in the Gold Cup and Nations League, Canada fell off at the end of the year and is now looking to rediscover some of its touch.
There are no injuries of note for either side. It’s unclear whether Alvarez or Martinez will be the first choice at forward for Argentina but that’s the only question mark.
Canada is not a side without talent but this Argentina team is on such a great run at the moment it’s hard to pick against the favorites. Give me Messi and company to get Copa America 2024 underway with a solid win.
