Copa America 2024 begins Thursday, June 20 with defending champions Argentina taking on Canada to kickstart the tournament. This summer’s competition will be slightly different from other recent events as it includes CONCACAF nations for the first time since 2016. Unlike Euro 2024, Copa America tiebreakers will start with overall group performance. The first tiebreaker is overall group goal differential and the second tiebreaker is total goals scored in the group stage. If the tie still cannot be broken, head-to-head record is now taken into account. Head-to-head points, head-to-head goal differential and head-to-head goals scored will be the tiers for that tiebreaker.
If the teams are still tied, the team that has accumulated fewer red cards will advance. The next tiebreaker is whichever team has accumulated fewer yellow cards. This is also a slight deviation from Euro 2024, which takes overall disciplinary record into account rather than separation by cards.
The final tiebreaker is a random draw to determine which team advances. This will only come into play if every group stage match finishes 0-0 with no card accumulation.
