The Atlanta Falcons are amid an offseason of change, kickstarted by the hiring of Raheem Morris as their new head coach. The franchise’s major move during free agency was signing quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million deal, providing a much-needed upgrade under center. However, their first-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft left many people scratching their heads.

Here’s a look at the projected offensive depth chart for the 2024 Atlanta Falcons following the 2024 NFL Draft.

Atlanta used the No. 8 pick on Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., which proved to be the most controversial selection of the entire draft. While one can understand the organization viewing Penix as their QB of the future, it’s a questionable move to use a first-rounder on a QB after they just signed Cousins to a multi-year deal the month prior. The Falcons had other pressing needs like pass rush that could’ve been addressed and instead, they opted to take a QB that will effectively redshirt for two years behind the veteran.

The only other offensive skill position players taken by Atlanta were Alabama running back Jase McClellan and Illinois wide receiver Casey Washington, both taken in the sixth round.

Fantasy managers who decide to take Cousins should also carve out a spot for Penix for insurance. The veteran QB is coming off an Achilles tear and given his age, there’s a chance the rookie’s services will be needed at some point in 2024.
