The PGA TOUR heads up north to Canada this week for the RBC Canadian Open. Hamilton Golf and Country Club will host, and measures as a 7,084-yard par 70, featuring Bentgrass greens.
As expected, the field is a bit light this week with Signature Events and the U.S. Open on the horizon, but does feature World No. 2 Rory McIlroy. In addition to Rory, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Cam Young and Sahith Theegala will all be teeing it up as well.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
Sam Burns to win (+2500)
This price stuck out to me because of who’s priced shorter than Burns this week. If you combine the career wins (not including the Zurich Classic) of Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Sahith Theegala, Cam Young, Corey Conners and Alex Noren, it equals the exact number of PGA TOUR victories that Burns has (five).
I am not gonna sit here and say that Burns is in elite form, because he’s not. However, he still has four top-10 finishes on the year, and just finished T13 at the Wells Fargo two starts ago. More good news for Burns is that his irons appear to be coming to life, as he gained 2.7 strokes on approach at the PGA Championship, despite missing the cut.
Two of Burns’ career wins have come at shorter positional tracks like Hamilton G&CC, including Colonial and Austin Country Club. He also finished T4 at this very event back in 2022, which was held at St. Georges — another 7,000-yard par 70.
This bet is one based on both career-pedigree and field strength, but it’s also just a really fun name to click at 25/1 in a field like this.
Akhsay Bhatia to win (+4500)
After winning the Valero Texas Open, Bhatia has gone a bit cold of late, missing each of his past two cuts and failing to record a top-10 finish in each of his past five starts. He’s simply too talented to continue this streak and I expect him to turn things around this week in Canada, at what should be a very scoreable Hamilton course.
Bhatia has always done his best work in birdie-fest type events, much like in Punta Cana or at the Barracuda Championship — where he picked up his first-career PGA TOUR win last Summer.
Overall, Bhatia ranks 12th in this field in SG: Tee-to-Green and seventh in Total Strokes Gained over his past 48 rounds, and presents quite a bit of value at this 45/1 number.
