Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Dallas Mavericks
Captain’s Picks
Luka Doncic ($20,400 CP) — This is the playoffs. The same teams match up every night. There are actual matchups. Game plans are created. Real defense is played. It’s not the run-and-gun regular season. One-off freestyle basketball in the regular season creates an environment for massive fantasy basketball scores. That’s not the playoffs. That’s not the environment in a playoff matchup with the best defense in the NBA. Doncic didn’t get the memo. He scored 60 DKFP in Game 1 and 69 DKFP in Game 2. He’s locked in and his eyes are on winning a championship.
Naz Reid ($8,400 CP) — It’s easier to get to Doncic with a cheap Captain’s Pick. This is doable as long as the NBA DFS value pick is a great point-per-dollar pick. Reid has provided a great return of value in his last four games — 6.5x, 5.2x, 6.5x and 7.8x. The best two values were matchups with the Mavs. In Game 2, Reid played 32 minutes and scored 34.5 DKFP. Will he get those minutes in Game 3? Reid did not start the second half. He entered halfway through the third quarter and never came off the floor. The coaching staff trusts him and wants him on the floor when it counts.
FLEX Plays
Anthony Edwards ($11,200) — A strong argument can be made that Ant-Man is the fade. He has faded. In big games, he’s playing small. He’s not Ant-Man, just an ant. Edwards has not made 10 field goals in five straight and six of the last seven. Give him credit, he’s still shooting. He’ll keep shooting in Game 3. The Timberwolves need a hero and he’s their leader. If this series is going to be saved in Dallas, then it’s on the Ant’s shoulders. Most DFS players have jumped ship, so ownership should be low on a superstar with plenty of potential. This is the risky NBA DFS pick that creates separation on Showdown Slates on DraftKings.
Kyrie Irving ($9,600) — Different matchups create different game plans. Irving was a facilitator in the Western Conference semi-finals. He initiated the offense. Doncic did the damage off-ball. Minnesota matches up differently. Irving’s role has changed. His usage rate was 30.9% in Game 1 and 24% in Game 2. He scored 43.25 and 37 DKFP in those contests. Irving is a famous closer. He’s a cold-blooded killer when a series can be sealed. A home game with a 2-0 lead in the series is the time to close the casket.
Dereck Lively II ($4,700) — Like Naz Reid, Lively doesn’t start. That doesn’t matter because he gets minutes. He’s averaging over 25 minutes per game in the last six games, It’s not just minutes. He’s producing. Lively has come to life. He’s been a point-per-minute producer over that span averaging a return of value over 6x. He’s worthy of Captain’s Pick consideration.
Fade
Karl-Anthony Towns ($7,200) — There’s plenty of finger pointing to go around. The T-Wolves let two home games slip away at home. They’re on the ropes and on the road. This position is the result of poor play from KAT. In Game 1, he was 6-for-20 from the field. He followed that dud with a 4-for-16 night. The coaching staff had enough and benched him in the fourth quarter and closed Game 2 with Naz Reid in the front court.
The Outcome
The Timberwolves could be up 2-0, but they’re not. The Mavs are getting the job done. Why would the Mavs stop working at home? Doncic and Irving have transformed into a super tandem. The Mavericks role players are playing like stars. Everything is clicking.
Final score: Mavericks 105, Timberwolves 101
