Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees

The Yankees have been an unstoppable hitting machine the past two weeks, yet I still think there’s value with the Mariners. It’s mostly due to the pitching matchup. While Marcus Stroman started the season without allowing an earned run across 12.0 innings, things haven’t been as smooth since. Thanks primarily to a mammoth 13.5% walk rate, Stroman is rocking an ugly 5.77 FIP dating back to April 10. It’s a span of time where the RHP is also surrendering 1.72 opponent home runs per nine. That’s not an ideal combination.
On the other side, we find Logan Gilbert. The 27-year-old had a rough day in Minnesota in early May, giving up eight earned runs in four innings, but he’s been more than solid in every other appearance he’s made in 2024. In fact, Gilbert’s allowed a single earned run or fewer in five of his nine starts this season, all while sporting a career-high in both strikeout rate (27.4%) and WHIP (0.95). That’s translated into a sterling 3.11 xERA. If Gilbert can pitch to his potential on Monday, he should have more than enough run support to pick up a win.

New York Mets at Cleveland Guardians
Tylor Megill Over 3.5 Strikeouts (-105)
It is possible for multiple contrasting things to be true at the same time. While you would be correct in identifying the Guardians as a team that does not strikeout all that much — they own baseball’s fifth-lowest strikeout rate (19.8%) — I also believe this prop is far too low for a pitcher of Megill’s caliber.
The 28-year-old has been working his way back from an early-season shoulder injury and will make his first MLB start since March 31 when he toes the rubber this evening. Take it with a grain of salt if you must, but Megill looked very sharp in his rehab assignment, striking out 23 batters in his 14.0 innings thrown across three levels. Sure, it’s the minor leagues, yet that’s a 46.0% strikeout rate. That’s going to turn heads regardless of where you happen to be stationed. Megill also owns a career 8.72 K/9 in 59 appearances with the Mets, so it’s not like he hasn’t shown the ability to put up above-average strikeout totals in New York. Megill threw 74 pitches in final final tune-up outing on May 12, which should mean 85-90 pitches on Monday. I think that’ll be more than enough runway to rack up four strikeouts.
