The second major tournament of 2024 tees off this week from Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The PGA Championship — a separate entity from the PGA TOUR that does not have a ban on LIV golfers participating — will run from Thursday, May 16 through Sunday, May 19. Fewer and fewer LIV golfers are qualifying for major tournaments as time passes — certain exemptions for majors are based on rankings including OWGR and FedExCup points and PGA TOUR wins, from which LIV golfers are largely excluded.
There are 16 total golfers competing from LIV this week, seven of which qualified as special invites. The PGA Championship offers a lifetime exemption to any previous winner of the tournament. This is a short list when it comes to LIV, including just Phil Mickelson (2005, 2021), Brooks Koepka (2018, 2019, 2023), and Martin Kaymer (2010). It also offers an exemption to those who have won any of the other three majors in the last five years. This list includes Bryson DeCheambeau (US Open, 2020), Dustin Johnson (Masters, 2020), Jon Rahm (Masters, 2023), and Cameron Smith (British Open, 2022).
Tyrrell Hatton finished in the top 15 at last year’s PGA Championship, making him eligible to return. Andy Ogletree ranks in the top three in the International Federation Ranking, granting him an exemption as well.
The remaining LIV golfers in the field at this year’s PGA Championship are all special invites.
