The Los Angeles Angels are in last place in the American League West standings and are looking for a win on Wednesday at home against the St. Louis Cardinals to steady what has been a tough start to the 2024 season.
St. Louis Cardinals (-122, 8.5) vs. Los Angeles Angels
While the Angels have seen their offensive production dip to averaging about 3.8 runs per game since Mike Trout was injured at the end of April, the lineup has a chance to get online against veteran Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn.
While Lynn’s 3.78 ERA on the surface isn’t overly concerning, he enters having allowed the most home runs of any MLB pitcher since the start of the 2024 season and his 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings allowed are on-pace to be his lowest since the 2017 season.
Opposing him on the mound for the Angels is Griffin Canning, whose 5.75 ERA is both concerning and high, but has a fielding independent lower than his ERA at 4.96 and enters having allowed three runs or fewer in four of his last five starts.
Canning also catches a break by facing a Cardinals lineup that entered Tuesday with fewer than 3.6 runs per game, which ranks 29th among the 30’MLB teams with their 0.6 home runs per game away from home being the lowest road mark in the National League.
Entering Tuesday, the only National League teams with a worse run differential than the Cardinals were the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins and with Lynn’s inability to keep the ball in the park, the Angels will win Wednesday’s series finale.
