The PGA TOUR heads to Kentucky this week for the 106th edition of the PGA Championship. Valhalla Golf Club will host, and measures as a 7,609-yard par 71, featuring Bentgrass greens.
This field is loaded, with all of the world’s top-100 golfers in attendance.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
Max Homa to win (+3500)
For whatever reason, major championships have never been Homa’s strong suit. It’s a true enigma, because his game is tailor-made for the game’s toughest tests. He’s an accurate driver, excellent long-iron player, and unlike many others on the PGA TOUR, can actually putt when he has to.
Furthering adding to the mystery is the fact that Homa has been so good on some of the game’s hardest courses throughout his career, posting wins at Quail Hollow, Riviera and Torrey Pines, just to name a few. It’s clearly been something mental with him, which he’s come out and said as well.
However, something clicked last Summer, as he posted a T10 at the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, his best-career finish at a major to that point. That was of course until last month’s Masters, where he battled with Scottie Scheffler and Ludvig Aberg until late on Sunday, before ultimately settling for a T3, which is now his new career best.
This can only be taken as a massive positive that Homa is learning to dominate on golf’s biggest stages, and I firmly expect him to go well again this week at Valhalla. He’s coming off a T8 at Quail Hollow last week, where he gained 2.16 strokes ball-striking and 5.77 from tee-to-green.
Homa’s game is dialed in right now, and this 35/1 number is more than reasonable.
Sepp Straka to win (+8000)
Straka usually plays well in bunches, and he’s currently in the midst of one of those stretches. The big Austrian is coming off a T8 at Wells Fargo last week, which was on the heels of a T5 at the RBC Heritage, and T16s at both the Masters and PLAYERS.
During this stretch, which dates back about 16 rounds, Straka ranks 13th in this field in SG: Ball-Striking and seventh in Total Strokes Gained. He’s already got two top-10s at majors in his career, which both came last year — a T2 at the Open Championship and T7 at the PGA Championship. In addition, he’s also a two-time PGA TOUR winner, triumphing at both the Honda Classic and John Deere Classic.
When Straka is in form he can hang with anyone in the world, and he’s showing that right now with this heater he’s been on. This 80/1 we’re getting on him is far too long for the caliber of golf he’s playing right now.
