The PGA TOUR heads to Charlotte this week for the Wells Fargo Championship. Quail Hollow Club will host this Signature Event, and measures as a 7,558-yard par 71, featuring Poa Trivialis overseeded greens.
This field is loaded, as Scottie Scheffler is the only qualified golfer not in attendance this week.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
Sahith Theegala to win (+2500)
Quail Hollow has led to multiple first-time PGA TOUR winners in the past (Max Homa, Wyndham Clark), and while Theegala technically got his first win this past fall at the Fortinet, winning a Signature Event at a course like this would be his breakthrough moment without question.
Theegala has really taken a step forward this season, having already posted five top-nine finishes, including two runners-up at the Sentry and most recently at the RBC Heritage. The Pepperdine product finished just T56 in his lone start at this course last year, but he has had success in the past at other Tom Fazio designs, such as Riviera.
We’ve known about Theegala’s skill with both an iron and putter in hand, but this year it’s been his once-paltry off-the-tee game that’s taken a massive leap. Theegala ranks seventh in this field in SG: Off-the-Tee over his past 24 rounds, while ranking fourth in Total Strokes Gained in the process.
He’s flashed a sky-high ceiling so far in 2024 and is well worth backing in this spot at 25/1.
Sungjae Im to win (+5000)
Im burned a bunch of people in the DFS streets last week with his post-lock withdrawal at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, but thankfully we don’t have to worry about stuff like that in the golf betting world. Im had been playing some stellar golf leading into last week, as he finished T12 the RBC Heritage, before winning the Woori Financial Group Championship on the Korean Tour the following week.
While we have no Strokes Gained Data available from his win, Im’s numbers did look impressive at Harbour Town, where he gained strokes both ball-striking and from tee-to-green. He’ll now return to Quail Hollow, a course where he finished T8 at last year.
There was once a point in time where Im was considered one of the best young players in the sport, so I will gladly take my chances here at 50/1 in a condensed field that he keeps up his recent strong play.
