The 150th Kentucky Derby is officially in the books and it is Mystik Dan who comes out on top in what turned into a photo finish at Churchill Downs. Mystik Dan completes the Oaks double after winning the Kentucky Oaks, and secures a massive Derby win for jockey Brian Hernandez and trainer Kenny McPeek. It’s only the fourth instance of a trainer winning both the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby in the same year.
Mystik Dan was 20-1 to win the Derby Saturday morning but did gain some momentum over the course of the day and closed at 18-1. Fiercness eventually became the favorite ahead of the race to win at 3-1, narrowly ahead of Sierra Leone at 9-2. Sierra Leone did finish second in what turned out to be a razor-thin margin, and Japan’s Forever Young finished in third place.
