The 2024 Kentucky Derby should see a full field of 20 horses going from the starting gate today, and what should be a wide-open Run for the Roses is set for a post time of 6:57 p.m. on Saturday.
The race is for three-year-old horses, with a total prize pool of $5 million making it the richest prize outside of the Breeder’s Cup in American thoroughbred racing. All horses had to qualify via the Road to the Kentucky Derby points system, with one entering via the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby in T O Password.
The field does have two strong favorites in Fierceness, the morning line chalk at 5-2, and the 3-1 Sierra Leone. But the rest of the horses are at no better than 8-1 via Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia’s projected final pricing.
