One of the premier names in boxing returns to the ring as undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez takes on Jaime Munguia this Saturday, May 4. The 12-round bout will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Live coverage of the main card begins at 8 p.m. ET on DAZN and Amazon Prime Video.
Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) needs no introduction. He’s held multiple titles in four separate weight classes and became the first fighter to achieve undisputed status at 168 pounds. In his last bout, Alvarez scored a knockdown against Jermell Charlo and won via unanimous decision. The win marked his third straight title defense of the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring belts.
Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) turned professional in 2013 and had a brief stint as WBO light middleweight champion. In January, the 27-year-old stopped John Ryder late to win by TKO. Although plenty of fight fans would have preferred David Benavidez, Munguia is the same age and has 43 pro wins under his belt. Per BoxRec, Munguia is currently ranked third among active super middleweights.
Before Canelo and Muguia clash, a pair of interim WBC titles are up for grabs. First, Brandon Figueroa (24-1-1, 19 KOs) defends his WBC interim featherweight title against Jessie Magdaleno (29-2, 18 KOs). Figueroa is a -1400 betting favorite, while Magdaleno enters with +800 underdog, according to Draftkings Sportsbook.
In the co-main event, reigning WBC interim welterweight champion Mario Barrios (28-2, 18 KOs) makes a title defense opposite Fabian Maidana (18-1, 13 KOs). Barrios is a -1200 betting favorite, while Maidana has +700 odds to win.
Lastly in the main event, Canelo is a -525 favorite to win and Munguia has +380 underdog odds. The favored method of victory is Canelo by decision (-105), per Draftkings Sportsbook.
