Houston Astros at Colorado Rockies
The Pick: Kyle Tucker over 0.5 Home runs (+225)
It’s time for the weekly Saturday home run prop. What better place than Coors Field? This isn’t Coors Field. Colorado is the home team, but the game takes place in Mexico City. No worries. The elevation in Mexico City is 2,000 feet higher than Denver. This might as well be Tecate Field or Corona Field.
Why Kyle Tucker (+225) and not Jose Altuve (+260)? Tucker has a .395 wOBA .435 xwOBA and .222 ISO. However, Cal Quantrill has been better against left-handed batters than right-handed batters. Oddly enough, Tucker has been better in same-handed matchups. He hits lefties better. So why not Altuve? Elevation and Explosion. Tucker has HardHits in all but two games (40 HardHits — 50.0% HardHit%). His average Launch Angle is 21.7° and Flyball% is 50.6%.
Speaking of Cal Quantrill, the Astros right-handed batters are in play in Mexico City. If the Tucker fly ball play is too cute, then take a right-handed bat from the Astros. Quantrill has allowed a .385 wOBA and .200 ISO to right-handed batters. But wait, there’s more. He surrenders 1.98 HR/9 with a 5.61 xFIP, 12.9% K-Rate and 48.9% Flyball%.
Washington Nationals at Miami Marlins
The Pick: Washington Nationals Money Line (+114)
Mitchell Parker was an injury call-up. A pitcher that couldn’t make the Nationals roster out of camp doesn’t sound appealing. A pitcher with two pitches doesn’t sound appealing. After two starts, the sound is harmonious. Parker’s arsenal features an average fastball, but his curveball is exceptional. He occasionally mixes in a splitter that keeps batters off balance. It’s working. He struck out Mookie Betts twice in his Major League debut and held the Dodgers to four hits and two runs across five innings. He followed by pitching seven scoreless innings against the Astros (eight strikeouts and four hits). The Astros have a top-5 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. The rookie lefty had no problem shutting them down.
The Marlins are the worst team in baseball against left-handed pitching. They have a 46 wRC+ vs. LHP. That’s unbelievably low. Their K-Rate is 20.7%. That’s not terrible but it’s not good. They’re power is nonexistent (.079 ISO). They generally can’t hit southpaws at all (.272 wOBA and .236 xwOBA). Is Parker for real? It’s a long season, but Saturday should be a long night for the Marlins.
New York Yankees at Milwaukee Brewers
The Pick: New York Yankees -1.5 (+124)
The lefties look good on Saturday’s MLB betting card. Carlos Rodon hasn’t looked good this season, but that should change. Rodon opened the season facing three of the best teams against left-handed pitching (Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros and Arizona Diamondbacks). His most recent start was against the previously mentioned Miami Marlins. He tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed one hit.
Milwaukee is better than Miami, but they too struggle with left-handed pitching. Wilson Contreras and Gary Sanchez (if he plays) are the only Brewers hitting left-handed pitching. There could be some revenge motivation for Sanchez against his former team, but that doesn’t move the dial. Blake Perkins has a .369 wOBA vs. LHP but his ISO is .000. He can have his singles. It won’t matter. As a team, the Brewers have an 80 wRC+, .305 wOBA, .117 ISO and 26.0% K-Rate vs. left-handed pitching.
