The 2024 NFL Draft begins in Detroit on Thursday, April 25, and Notre Dame offensive lineman Joe Alt won’t have to wait long to hear his name called. The tackle was named a unanimous All-American in 2023 after three seasons of excellence with the Fighting Irish. Alt stands at 6-foot-9 and 321 pounds, and is expected to be selected within the first 10 picks of this year’s draft.

Alt’s length and size make him a dream for NFL scouts, and his captaincy at Notre Dame speaks to the leadership skills he demonstrated on the O-line. Alt limits his penalties, playing a clean game, and has quick instincts on his blocks. He allowed only one sack in all of 2022 and 2023, and let up 13 quarterback pressures in that time — averaging around one QB pressure allowed every two games.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein speaks to Alt’s strengths in his scouting report, but highlights a few weaknesses that he will need to improve upon in the upcoming season, as well:
Long-limbed team captain with NFL-quality tackle play coursing through his veins. Alt plays a disciplined brand of football, avoiding penalties and working with fluid transitions from entry to sustain to finish as a run blocker. Alt is a capable drive blocker with the foot quickness to play onto the second level. He struggles to bend enough to compensate for his height and ends up playing with waist-bending and forward lean that can hamper his anchor against bull-rushers. Alt has quick hands and outstanding arm extension, promoting his ability to sustain blocks and redirect pass-rushers. He’s a good technician who carries himself with confidence from snap to snap. Alt clearly has the talent to become a Day 1 starter on the left side, but he’ll need to clean up his habit of leaning forward, or he could be in for some bumpy action early on.

Alt lands with the Tennessee Titans with the No. 7 overall pick in mock drafts from Mel Kiper at ESPN, Bruce Feldman at The Athletic, and Danny Kelly at The Ringer. He would join Peter Skoronski on the front line protecting Titans quarterback Will Levis.
