The 2024 NFL Draft will take place from Thursday, April 25 through Saturday, April, 27 from Hart Plaza in Detroit. Toledo corner back Quinyon Mitchell has been one of the biggest draft risers over the past few months and could possibly be the first defensive back taken off the board. We’ll see if that comes to fruition when he enters the NFL ranks on Thursday.
Mitchell was a three-star recruit out of Williston, FL, in high school and arrived at Toledo in 2020. Redshirting as a freshman, he got his opportunity to start in 2021 and began emerging as one of the most productive corners in the entire in the entire nation. He’d end up earning back-to-back All-American honors in his final two season with the Rockets, combining for 82 tackles, 37 passes defended, and six interceptions. He’d go on to solidify himself as a first-rounder with strong showings at both the Senior Bowl and the NFL Scouting Combine, running an impressive 4.33 40-yard dash.
Quinyon Mitchell: Scouting Report
According to NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein, his combination of size, strength, speed, and tackling skills is what makes him one of the elite secondary prospects in this class. Here’s part of his assessment:
… Mitchell can play in a variety of coverages and was the clear-cut top cornerback at the Senior Bowl when working against the top receivers in practice. While he needs to trace a more efficient path when hounding the route, his burst to close and physicality at the catch point could create tougher throwing windows for quarterbacks …
Mock Draft landing spots
Most mock drafts are projecting Mitchell to go somewhere in the 10-17 range in the first round. Zierlein is projecting him to the Denver Broncos at No. 12 while ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Field Yates predicted the Las Vegas Raiders taking him at No. 13. Meanwhile, NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah has him falling to the Jacksonville Jaguars at No. 17, playing roughly two hours from his hometown of Williston.
