The Kansas City Chiefs were able to take home the Lombardi Trophy last season despite sporting one of Patrick Mahomes’ “worst” offenses of his career. They were of course still above average, but their defense put them over the top. They’ll look to become the first team in the Super Bowl era to win three straight championships this season. That means the draft will be key.
Last year the Chiefs added WR Rashee Rice in the draft and he went on to become their No. 1 receiver for a Super Bowl run. They’ve added and retained some key players this offseason, but if they hit in the draft, the three-peat would be even more attainable.
2024 Mock Draft: Kansas City Chiefs
Key Offseason Additions/Losses
WR Marquise Brown signed with the team this offseason, giving the Chiefs a strong deep threat and overall receiver. Brown has shown plenty of ability in his career and now Mahomes gets some help. They let WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling walk in free agency, but Brown is an upgrade.
The biggest move was likely being able to retain DE Chris Jones, who was a huge part of their top-tier defense in 2023. They were also able to re-sign LB Drue Tranquill, but unfortunately, they did lose CB L’Jarius Sneed, who they traded to the Titans for a third-round pick.
Kansas City Chiefs First Three Picks
Looking across the landscape of mock drafts the Chiefs have been mocked wide receiver, offensive tackle and cornerback the most. Those all make plenty of sense as to their needs. The addition of Marquise Brown does put into question their desire to draft a wide receiver in the first round, but you know we like to see Mahomes with as many weapons as possible.
Round 1, Pick 32 — Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia
At this point in the draft, there is a chance at three wide receivers who would be good picks here, Ladd McConkey, Xavier Worthy, and Adonai Mitchell. All have plenty of upside along with different skill sets. With Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown, the team could probably bring any of these guys into the fold and be good. It also could come down to who is left on the board. I think McConkey will be available and his route running and ability to get open would be extremely helpful for a team that often needs to throw underneath, as defenses do their best at keeping Mahomes from connecting on chunk plays.
Round 2, Pick 64 — Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale
Amegadjie is still pretty raw and needs to be coached up, but he has the size and traits to be a good lineman in this league. He’s not going to come in and start Day 1, but his upside is great enough to grab him here. The Chiefs, especially with Patrick Mahomes at the helm, can get away with average play on the line, but they are getting thin there and need some reinforcements in this draft.
Round 3, Pick 95 — Khyree Jackson, CB, Oregon
Jackson is a big corner who could likely play safety at some point, but his physical traits should keep him at corner. He’s going to tackle and win on most jump balls. He needs some coaching on technique, but Steve Spagnuolo should be able to get him ready and use him sooner rather than later. He won’t be a one-for-one in replacing L’Jarius Sneed, but he could develop into a similar player.
