Did Coach Spo call for a “Code Red?” Brian Scalabrine explains his comments

The Celtics-Heat series got underway this weekend, with the Celtics laying the smackdown on the Heat, 114-94. The game got a little chippy at the end, however, and Celtics broadcaster Brian Scalabrine saw what he would call a “Code Red.”

Scalabrine joined The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz to discuss his comments and the Celtics-Heat series as whole.

It should be noted that Scal was booked to join the show even BEFORE his comments, which had him catching Heat (pun intended) from all angles, including the coincidentally absent Jeremy and JuJu in the postgame, as well as Heat legend Udonis Haslem.

So how does Scal think the “Code Red” was ordered, given Caleb Martin appeared to be pushed into Jayson Tatum and the timeout was called to challenge a play? Scal says he sees things both ways, but people who follow the Heat are only seeing things from one side.

Israel Gutierrez says the thing he thinks people are taking issue with when it comes to Scal’s “Code Red” comments is the assertion that Heat coach Erik Spoelstra ordered the “Code Red.” Izzy said that, to him, sounded like a disrespectful element of Scal’s take. So Izzy wonders what it sounds like when a coach orders a “Code Red” at the beginning of a series like this. Scal wonders if the Heat were repeatedly shown the dustup from earlier this season involving Jaylen Brown and Duncan Robinson to plant a seed not to let themselves get punked by the Celtics. Izzy concedes that play may have been shown, but he doesn’t necessarily think it was intended as a call for retaliation. Scal, however, says if you don’t think that in a timeout in a blowout that Spo was calling on his players to send a message then you don’t truly buy into the supposed meaning of “Heat Culture.”

Scal also took umbridge with Tim Reynolds’ assertion that he was mad at the Miami media for not calling it out. In fact, Scal says he’s mad at the BOSTON media for not calling it out. Why would the Miami media point it out, he asks? He wanted the Boston media to ask Celtics coach Joe Mazzula if he thought it was a dirty play! He doesn’t expect the Miami media to make this a story. The Boston media, on the other hand? He expects them to make it a story.

SHOW BREAKDOWN

Local Hour: Where’s Jeremy?

  • Today’s Cast: Dan, Stu, Izzy, Chris, Billy, Jess and interestingly NOT Jeremy. The Heat got thrashed by the Celtics and most of the crew is fully expecting a sweep. The Panthers dominated the Lightning and Dan cannot believe that Nikita Kucherov was nowhere to be found. It was all part of the most boring exciting weekend in history, which included Scottie Scheffler winning yet again. The crew also dives into plenty of topics from the NBA Playoffs, including whether people actually like watching the Celtics, Dame Time’s arrival in Milwaukee, Anthony Edwards beefing with Kevin Durant and Kawhi and Joel Embiid continuing to struggle with availability.

Big Suey: Valerie’s List of 13 Centers Better Than Bam

  • Dan got sent a list of 13 centers that are better than Bam, nine of which are non-debatable but the crew has plenty of debate about them. Most importantly, who sent him the list? Stan Van Gundy? Nick Wright? VALERIE?! Hmmmm. Plus, Stugotz is tired of Joel Embiid, Dan wants to give the Heat’s fanbase more credit than it deserves and discusses the quality of studio shows on NBA coverage. Brian Scalabrine joins the show to defend his take that Erik Spoelstra ordered a code red—or maybe a code dark orange—on Jayson Tatum. He also answers the all-important question, shot for your life: Sam Hauser or Larry Bird.

Hour 1: Three Goosies In One Video

  • The Rockies hitting coach got some pilots in trouble for being in the cockpit during a flight. Dan runs through a list of each baseball team’s most famous fan and the Marlins answer will make you sad. What does Elton John know about Ronald Acuña? Plus, Izzy is fired up about the Panthers who actually have an identity and a style of play they are known for. Dan champions a win for laziness after Ryan García won a fight he apparently didn’t even train for. Chris thinks Wemby is hiding something after his comments about being “immune to temptation” and the crew goes further into detail on the Jontay Porter scandal and Taylor Swift’s new double album.

Hour 2: LeBaturd and Weiner

  • The hour kicks off with Stugotz’s Weekend Observations coming off the first weekend of the NBA and NHL playoffs and heading into NFL Draft week. Then, Dan is curious who will get the rights to the NFL Draft after ESPN loses them this year, and Pat McAfee’s new weekly show with Bill Belichick. The show discusses how McAfee has created a comfortable environment where big names want to do weekly shows with him, as well as why people distrust the media. Then, Sal Licata and Brandon Tierney of WFAN have beef with “LeBaturd and Ugotz” after Stu turned down the program director job. Stugotz isn’t going to start beef with them, but he will end their careers.

Postgame Show: Spliffnotes with Juju Gotti

  • Juju Gotti joins Dan to share his thoughts on how he thinks the show did today. He shares his surprise that the show actually started with sports today rather than cupcake drama or other nonsense, his critiques on Dan’s takes about Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant, Brian Scalabrine’s interview and the show’s discussion about Pat McAfee’s show.

MMA Hangout: Special Interview With Justin Gaethje

  • Justin Gaethje joins Tony on the MMA Hangout and opens up about the crazy week before and after the incredible UFC 300 card and his fight with Max Holloway. Check out Justin’s Rise & Grind episode on OFTV: https://of.tv/video/66195cf42c28650001eb0cf2/
