The NBA has issued a lifetime ban for Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter following an investigation into gambling habits surrounding Porter in specific games. According to Shams Charania, Porter knowingly participated in the scheme which involved him limiting his participation in games so bettors could cash in on unders for his player props. Porter also placed bets on NBA games using someone else’s account. He has placed wagers on sports events before, although betting companies have stated they did not accept his bets on NBA games.

There were two specific games in question when the league first began its investigation into Porter. There were large wagers on unders for Porter’s player props, and he would leave both games due to “injuries”. Commissioner Adam Silver did say recently a lifetime ban was on the table if Porter was indeed found guilty and that’s exactly what happened.
The introduction of sports betting has certainly made sports leagues richer, but it has also brought forth the idea of how players could be in on the fix. The entire premise of sports and sports betting is that the outcome is unknown, so Porter participating in this way undermines not just the potential revenue stream but the integrity of the league itself. The NBA had no real alternative options when it came to leveling a punishment.
We’ll see if this incident pushes sports leagues to have stricter rules when it comes to betting. Wide receiver Calvin Ridley was notably suspended for his sports betting habits, and several Detroit Lions players were also suspended for wagers they made.
