Live coverage of Tiger Woods first round at the 2024 Masters

Tiger Woods is back for the 2024 Masters, despite his continued leg injuries and a question about whether he can walk the 72 holes needed to complete the tournament at Augusta National.

But the 15-time major winner is one to never be counted out, and no one knows their way around the hallowed grounds of the course that has defined his career more than any other.

We’ll keep track of every shot Eldrick hits during his first round on Thursday, April 11 at Augusta National. Due to the weather delay, he’s scheduled to tee off at 3:42 p.m. with a fun group in Jason Day and Max Homa.

Hole No. 1; Par 4, 445 yards: Birdie. And we’re off! Tiger splits the fairway on the always challenging first hole. From 169 out he drops in a hole-high eight-iron beauty to the center of the green. His first putt of the Masters is center-cut, and we’ve got a birdie!

Hole No. 2; Par 5, 585 yards: Par. Progress is never a straight line, and Eldrick yanks it deep into the woods on the left right next to a huge tree. He’s forced to play his second shot left-handed with an upside-down iron just to get it back into the fairway. After duffing it left from the fairway, he did get up and down to make a saving par with a nice scramble.

Hole No. 3; Par 4, 350 yards: Par. Tiger drives it close on the short Par 4, and chips it onto the green leaving himself about 10 feet of putt. But it’s a total misread, and he leaves it about two balls left of the cup. Tap-in for par.

Hole No. 4; Par 3, 240 yards: Bogey. Duffed well into the rough as it was overcooked, Tiger chips back to just off the green and about 12 feet from the cup. But he misses the scramble save left, and makes the six-foot comebacker to avoid disaster.

Hole No. 5; Par 4, 495 yards Par: The tee ball was stripled perfectly down the right side of the fairway, leaving about 200 exactly to get home. The second is right to the center of the green, leaving about 15 feet uphill for birdie. But the putt rolls just back, and he makes the two-foot come-backer to stay level.

Hole No. 6; Par 3, 180 yards: Par. A tough bounce means Tiger comes up likely a yard short, and leaves him on the wrong level of the two-tiered green. He’s got about 15 yards of putt from below, and gets his lag inside six feet. He makes the short one for a nice save.

Hole No. 7; Par 4, 450 yards: Par. Driven off the fairway left, he had 171 yards to the flag. But the club grabbed in the second cut, and his second comes up short of the green and in the bunker. But he spins it to two feet, and makes the tap-in par.

Hole No. 8; Par 5, 570 yards: Birdie. A scorcher down the right side of the fairway leaves a birdie chance from here. He sticks it on the green about 15 yards away from the cup on the right side of the green for his second. The eagle putt lags to about five feet from a birdie on the right side of the hole, and he makes the short putt to get back to -1.

Hole No. 9; Par 4, 460 yards: Par. Another frozen rope striped from the tee box, and his second is from the center of the fairway. His second comes up a bit short and on the lower level in the front of the green. The putt is just a few rolls short as well, and a tap-in for par to close the front side.

Woods is -1 through nine holes

Hole No. 10; Par 4, 495 yards: Par. Tiger goes 3-wood in an attempt to turn it over and head down one of the steepest hills in all of pro golf. But he doesn’t quite get all of it, and is in the fairway but still a bit back from a tough pin. He lands his second in the greenside bunker to the right. A nice up and down from the bunker via a three-foot putt saves par.

Hole No. 11; Par 4, 520 yards: Par. Another striped ball off the tee, and quite long towards a green with a very small target size sloping down to the right. But in gusty conditions his second comes up 77 feet right and short of the cup. With a tricky up-and-down from a downhill lie to the green, he spins it flawlessly to kick-in range.

Hole No. 12; Par 3, 155 yards: Par. The shortest hole on the course is all about yardage control, and with the wind whipping up Tiger grounds his tee for a 7-iron. A 3/4 punch however bounces on the green, then rolls into the pine straw deep behind the putting surface. A clever chip back left him six feet short on the tricky green, and a nice save kept Tiger in red figures.

Hole No. 13; Par 4, 545 yards: Par. A driver that is a total block ends up at least 30 yards right of the fairway. A low punch to stay out of the trees barely crawled back to the fairway, but he stuck it from about 190 yards to the center of the dance floor for a green in regulation.

From here the horn sounded, which gives the group on the course the chance to end play when they choose due to darkness. Play will resume at 7:50 a.m. ET tomorrow.
