As the New Orleans Saints face the Detroit Lions in Week 13, tight end Juwan Johnson has suddenly skyrocketed on the fantasy radar. With injuries impacting the Saints’ receivers, the tight end has suddenly become a hot commodity on the waiver wire. Still, is the upside genuine or a bit premature when looking ahead to the matchup?

Fantasy Football analysis: Saints TE Juwan Johnson

Johnson is ranked as TE38 heading into Week 13, having averaged 5.5 PPR fantasy points per game this season. He’s caught 18 of his 29 targets for 142 yards and one touchdown, though his role has expanded as of late due to injuries to New Orleans’ receiving corps.

Start or sit in Week 13 PPR leagues?

Start. Despite briefly leaving the game, only to return, Johnson totaled a season-high 45 receiving yards after catching four of his seven targets in Week 12. His services were desperately needed given the injuries hampering the Saints’ receiving group, thus, Johnson should be a hot commodity this week. The matchup works decently in his favor as well, as the Lions are allowing 7.5 fantasy points per game to the position.

Given his status atop the Saints’ battered receiving group, Johnson is a TE1 for Week 13.

Start or sit in Week 13 standard leagues?

Start. With the Saints receiving depth chart absent of Michael Thomas (injured reserve) and Chris Olave (concussion), Johnson ended up finishing with astronomical usage numbers for his position. He totaled an 85 percent route run rate, an 18.4 percent target share, and a 20 percent first-read share. With New Orleans’ receiving group likely short-handed once again, Johnson is a must-start as a solid TE1 this week versus the Lions.

Player(s) you would start ahead of Juwan Johnson

Logan Thomas of the Washington Commanders is a viable replacement option over Johnson and has a plus matchup on deck versus the Miami Dolphins. Miami ranks 11th in pass defense, but Thomas has the opportunity to benefit from garbage time yardage opportunities if the game script goes to plan. Plus, a potential early double-digit deficit could force Sam Howell to go pass-happy early and often, benefiting receivers like Thomas.
