The NFL’s regular season is ending, as is season-long fantasy football. While most people are tired from the grind of four months of the fantasy grind, others want to keep going. Thus, playoff fantasy football was created. It can vary with rules, so make sure you understand roster construction, point scoring, and if they are weekly matchups or the playoffs as a whole.
While so much debate goes into fantasy football rankings ahead of the regular season, you may have to change your thinking in the playoffs. Some leagues are week-to-week matchups, which means that the No. 1 seeds in each conference won’t play in the first week. So if the Baltimore Ravens have the No. 1 seed and a bye, running back Gus Edwards would register a zero in the first round. If you have good depth, this may not be a dealbreaker, but if not, he could be a waste of a pick with a first round loss tough to overcome.
Christian McCaffrey has his name in the MVP conversation due to his rushing and receiving abilities. While he may be thought of as the unquestioned No. 1 overall pick, the San Francisco 49ers have the best odds in Week 17 to earn the NFC’s No. 1 seed eventually. Drafting CMC would mean you need to pair him with another solid running back in case he has a bye for the first week of the playoffs. But, if San Francisco doesn’t end with the No. 1 seed or if you can secure a round 1 win, he would give you a ton of upside for the rest of the playoffs.
The Detroit Lions are still in the hunt for the No. 1 seed and are guaranteed a top-four seed. Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery have a lot of upside in playoff drafts. They have split rushing work fairly evenly this season. Gibbs has 872 yards and nine rushing touchdowns, while Montgomery has 910 yards and 11 touchdowns. If Detroit doesn’t get the No. 1 seed, they are likely to have a favorable matchup in the first week at least.
