Somehow, against all odds, Alabama found a way.
On fourth & goal from the 31-yard line, after a lost snap and a penalty for an illegal pass, Jalen Milroe found Isaiah Bond in the corner of the end zone with a perfect throw to give the Alabama Crimson Tide a 27-24 lead over the Auburn Tigers.
Milroe had all the time in the world as Auburn swarmed the end zone with defenders, and they pulled ahead 27-24 with a made PAT after trailing for most of the second half. A walkoff Pick Six appeared to make the final score 33-24, but it was overruled after replay.
The game ended with the clock running out as the two teams brawled on the field. The referees declined to call a penalty, instead choosing to let the clock run down as Auburn attempted one last chaotic drive that ended in a Tide score.
After a loss to New Mexico State last week, it really looked like Payton Thorne and the Tigers were going to do the impossible and defeat Alabama. But it wouldn’t be the Iron Bowl without this kind of drama and showmanship — and cold-blooded hatred between the teams — and the entertainment value is off the charts. The Tide will go on to face Georgia in Atlanta next week at the SEC Championship Game.
Here’s the Auburn radio call of the Hail Mary:
Jalen Milroe, for his multiple errors today, finished the game 16-for-24 for 259 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.
