Washington Commanders QB Sam Howell entered Week 7 vs. the New York Giants having taken 34 sacks on the season. Going into that game, he was on pace to reach 99 sacks taken on the season, which would shatter the NFL record of 76 set by Houston Texans QB David Carr in 2002. Here we’re going to be tracking how many sacks Howell has this season.

How many sacks has Commanders QB taken in 2023?

Total: 42 sacks

Week 9 update — Howell just got his first sack of Week 9 vs. the Patriots but the Commanders are doing a good job protecting the QB again.

Week 8 update — Howell only got sacked once in Week 8 vs. the Eagles but the Commanders weren’t able to hold on for a win. It’s encouraging for fantasy managers that Howell was just sacked once and he tore up Philly’s defense.

Week 8 halftime update — Howell wasn’t sacked and we’re at halftime of Week 8 vs. the Eagles. It’s the best protection Howell has had all season. He hasn’t went a game without being sacked at least four times. There’s still a whole half left but if this continues, it could hurt Howell’s chances of setting the sack record.

Week 8 first half update — Howell is carving up the Eagles defense through a quarter and change and it’s because, yes, you guessed it, he hasn’t taken a sack yet. It’s amazing what a QB can do when he’s upright most of the time. Howell has two passing TDs and the Commanders have a 14-3 lead in the second quarter.

Week 7 recap — Howell ended the game with six sacks and has been sacked 40 times on the season. The Commanders fell to the Giants 14-7 in Week 7. Howell is on pace for 97 sacks on the season.

Week 7, third quarter update — Howell has been sacked again and the tally for Sunday is up to six. His total for the season is now at 40 sacks through about six and a half games.

Week 7, halftime update — Howell has been sacked FIVE times already at halftime of Week 7 vs. the Giants. The Commanders offensive line can’t keep him on his feet and the team is trailing 14-0 at halftime. Howell is going to have to chuck the ball the rest of the game for the Commanders to have a shot at coming back. That’ll mean the O-Line should be susceptible to more pressure.
