We have two months in 2023, but that doesn’t mean the box office has taken its foot off the gas pedal. On the contrary, there are still some varied films from biopics, superhero sequels, feel-good soccer story about an underdog team, horror, and animation to come. Take a peek at some of the films we looked to highlight for November.
Priscilla (November 3rd)
Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla will see a limited theatrical release as this biopic stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as Priscilla and Elvis Presley. After Baz Lurhmann helmed the biopic about the King of Rock and Roll last summer, Coppola focuses on his wife in this release. The film is based on the 1985 memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley, who also served as an Executive Producer.
The Marvels (November 10th)
The 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will see Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) join forces in The Marvels. The three heroes find their powers entangled with one another and will need to work strategically as they face a new cosmic threat in Dar-Benn, portrayed by Zawe Ashton. The film is a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, 2021’s WandaVision, and 2022’s Ms. Marvel.
Next Goal Wins (November 17th)
Oscar-winning screenwriter Taika Waititi delves into the biographical sports comedy-drama genre in Next Goal Wins, starring Michael Fassbender as Dutch-American coach Thomas Rongen. The film follows Rongen’s pursuit to lead the American Samoa national football team, which is regarded as one of the weakest football teams in the world, to qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Oscar Kightley, Will Arnett, and Elisabeth Moss join Fassbender as part of the ensemble cast.
Thanksgiving (November 17th)
October may be over, but the horror genre carries over into November with Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving. The slasher film is based on Roth’s mock trailer of the same name from 2007’s Grindhouse and stars Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, and Gina Gershon among the ensemble cast. In the latest horror flick to hit theaters, a mysterious serial killer known only as “John Carver” terrorizes the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, as he seeks to create a Thanksgiving carving board out of the town’s inhabitants.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (November 17th)
The Hunger Games series welcomes its fifth installment in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which serves as a prequel to the original franchise. Based on the novel of the same name, the film stars Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, and Peter Dinklage as they headline an ensemble cast that includes Jason Schwartzman and Viola Davis. Set 64 years before The Hunger Games, the film will follow the events that lead Coriolanus Snow to become the tyrannical ruler of Panem, which audiences saw in the original series.
Disney’s Wish (November 22nd)
Disney’s next animated feature is a musical fantasy film starring Ariana DeBose as Wish’s leading character, Asha. Asha is a 17-year-old who wishes on a star to save her kingdom from an ensuing threat. DeBose is joined by a stacked voice-acting cast list that includes Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Evan Peters, and Ramy Youseff, among others. The film is inspired by Disney’s centennial anniversary, which is born out of the theme of wishes becoming a reality, which is central to nearly every Disney film made.
Napoleon (November 22nd)
Ridley Scott’s epic historical drama film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular French leader Napoleon Bonaparte, with a dedicated focus on his rise to power and his relationship with Empress Joséphine, who Vanessa Kirby portrays. While Scott’s film isn’t the first depiction of Napoleon’s checkered rise to power, it will stand on its own as it describes his rise and fall specifically through the lens of Joséphine and her respective relationship with the French leader.
