The America’s Got Talent quarterfinals came to a close on Tuesday, once again with a replacement judge on the panel for the special mega-episode. There were 11 acts trying to punch their ticket to the semifinals this week, with one earning a spot in the finals and the other 10 of them at the mercy of a fan vote with the semifinals on the line. And for the first time ever, the quarterfinals performances and results were all on one night.

Impressionist Cameron Logsdon, knife throwing duo Tyrone & Margo, novelty act Akira, singer Jesse Joe and parkour act Rubén Roldán Bustos were the first acts to get the bad news Tuesday night. And despite reaching the top five, vocal duo Bird and Byron and singer Lara D got eliminated as well.
Who advanced on America’s Got Talent?
The first act to advance out of Quarterfinals 4 was Unitree, who got a Golden Buzzer from judge Sofia Vergara live on Tuesday. As a result, the robot dance group skipped both the fan vote and semifinals entirely, jumping straight to the finals.
The results portion of the episode that got underway at 10 p.m. ET, with the voting closing five minutes later. It featured a tribute to Terry Crews’ NFL career from Dan Patrick, plus guest performances from country singer Warren Zeiders and Oz the Mentalist. Those performances killed time before the voting results themselves came out. Ultimately, comedian Cesar Dias, magicians Young & Strange and singer Travis Garland advanced to the semifinals.. The survivors will perform again on Tuesday, September 15, before discovering their fate again on Wednesday, September 16.
What happened to Simon Cowell?
One of the four celebrity judges, Simon Cowell, has been absent since the week of Quarterfinals 2. Longtime SNL cast member Kenan Thompson served as Cowell’s stand-in for the Quarterfinals 3 performances, while former AGT judge Heidi Klum replaced Cowell for Quarterfinals 4.
Cowell, 66, underwent a routine medical procedure in August and will be absent from America’s Got Talent for the next few weeks. According to Entertainment Weekly, Cowell had the surgery to address back issues. He initially started having back problems in August 2020, when he got in an electric bike accident and required fusion surgery.
