In two World Cup appearances prior to 2026, Canada had never even picked up a point, much less a win. But soccer is on the rise in the country, and its golden generation could make history at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. local) this afternoon, as a Reds win or draw against Switzerland would secure the top position in Group B and a Round of 32 matchup against a third-place team.

FT: And the Reds’ consistent pressure on the goal at the end of the match all results in nothing. That’s the game. Switzerland has won Group A and will play in Vancouver on July 2! Canada will play in Los Angeles against (likely) South Korea on June 28! Bosnia and Herzegovina look likely to advance as well, which might pit it against the United States on July 1 in San Francisco!
90’+6: Was that the final chance of the game? Alistair Johnson got a good look from the right side of the box, but his header didn’t challenge Kobel too much!
90’+3: Promise David almost did it again! Off of a long throw, he had a nice header towards the right side of the ball, but Gregor Kobel’s instincts were just better! It stays 2-1 for Nati!
90’+1: That’s another good chance created by an Alistair Johnson cross, but once again, Cornelius’ header just missed the far post. Still, Canada has had most of the ball over the past 15 minutes, and it has another five minutes to find an equalizer.
87′: Liam Millar has received a card after grabbing the back of Dan Ndoye’s shirt on a counter-attack. It’s his first yellow of the tournament, and yellows get wiped after the group stage, so he should be good to avoid a suspension, but the moment of indiscipline wasn’t what the crowd wanted to see.
85′: A couple of substitutions for Switzerland as well. Embolo and Manzabi have both been pulled for more defensive-oriented players.
83′: That’s the final substitution there for Canada, as Jacob Shaffelburg has come on. He’s a more attacking-oriented player than Richie Laryea. Meanwhile, in Seattle, Bosnia and Herzegovina finally broke the seal off of what had been a boring second half, netting to go up 3-1 thanks to a goal by Ermin Mahmić. The Dragons have effectively sealed their place in the Round of 32, where they’ll likely meet the United States!
80′: Dan Ndoye has now entered the match for Switzerland for Ruben Vargas. Ndoye is a similarly attack-oriented player, so he won’t necessarily help Nati park the bus and slow this game down if they so desire.
79′: That was nearly it from Derek Cornelius! Eustaquio sent in a great ball from a free kick, but Cornelius put it wide of the near post!
76′: KEEPING HIS PROMISE! JUST UNDER 90 SECONDS AFTER COMING ON, PROMISE DAVID MAKES A HUGE IMPACT ON THE GAME BY SCORING HIS FIRST WORLD CUP GOAL! CANADA HAS LIFE! A GREAT BALL OVER THE TOP FINDS NATHAN-DYLAN SALIBA ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOX, AND AFTER AN EXQUISITE PIECE OF SKILL, HE CROSSED IT TO PROMISE DAVID. THE CROWD IN VANCOUVER IS FEELING THE COMEBACK! SWITZERLAND 2, CANADA 1.
74′: Both teams have now made some changes after the break. Silvan Widmer and Michel Aebischer come on for Luca Jaquez and Djibril Sow for Switzerland, and Promise David is on for Canada to replace Tajon Buchanan.
71′: The whistle has come for the hydration break in Vancouver. Nothing of note has happened in the Bosnia and Herzegovina-Qatar game; although Akram Afif got close to equalizing for the Maroons, it remains 2-1 headed into the hydration break there as well.
68′: Liam Millar, who came on as a substitute, found Jonathan David in the box, and while David’s shot was blocked out for a corner that ultimately turned into nothing thanks to another nice Kobel punch, that’s a very solid play for the Reds! They need to keep getting David, the hat trick scorer against Qatar, involved in the action.
66′: Manzambi looks to have sustained an injury, so play stops. He’ll stay in the game for now.
63′: Canada has had some better chances over the last few minutes, stringing together back-to-back corner kicks, but Gregor Kobel made a great play to punch it away from danger right on the goal line. A goal remains elusive for the Reds, and it’s getting late early in Vancouver.
59′: Expectedly, Jesse Marsch has now made changes. Stephen Eustaquio is coming on for Mathieu Choinière, Liam Millar is in for Ali Ahmed, and Tani Oluwaseyi is in for Cyle Larin!
57′: OH, WHAT A MISTAKE BY MAXIME CREPEÁU! SWITZERLAND STRUCK ON THE COUNTER, AND BREEL EMBOLO LAID IT OFF TO JOHAN MANZAMBI, WHO ROCKETED ONE RIGHT AT CANADA’S GOALKEEPER FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOX. IT SLIPPED UNDER HIS ARM AND INTO THE BACK OF THE NET!
55′: A couple of really sloppy passes there from Canada in the last few minutes. Jesse Marsch’s men look nervous, knowing they need at a goal to win the group for the first time ever.
51′: It’s all been Switzerland so far in the second half, as Breel Embolo and Johan Manzambi have had plenty of touches inside Canada’s penalty box. Nati has dominated possession all game, completing nearly three times as many passes as the Reds have. If this result holds, the Reds will play their Round of 32 match in Los Angeles, not Vancouver, and given Southern California’s large Korean population, they may not have a friendly crowd.
46′: WELL, HOW’S THAT FOR AN ANSWER!? RUBEN VARGAS SCORES FOR NATI AND SWITZERLAND IS IN POSITION TO WIN GROUP B!! HE HOOKED A RIGHT-FOOTED SHOT FROM NEAR THE PENALTY SPOT OFF THE NEAR POST AND INTO THE BACK OF THE NET! 1-0!
46′: Action is back on in Vancouver, where Switzerland has started with possession in the second half! The Europeans have looked like the better team so far, but their goal has not yet come. How aggressive will they be?
HT: The referee has blown for halftime in Vancouver! Right now, Canada has done everything it needs to do to ultimately draw, while Switzerland has pushed harder for a go-ahead strike, leading the expected goal race, 0.67-0.3. Nati’s odds to win are +195, with the Reds at +275 and a draw at +120. In Seattle, both the Maroons and the Dragons have hit the post in the last 12 minutes, but the score line remains 2-1 at halftime.
45′: In Seattle, Qatar scored to make it 2-1 behind the left foot of Hassan Al Haydos. It doesn’t have much of an impact on this game, but it gives the Reds even more breathing room in the worst-case scenario.
41′: A couple of good efforts for Canada here in the last couple of minutes. Ali Ahmed, making his first start of the tournament, drew a free kick near the edge of the box, and while it turned to nothing, he produced another shot just a minute later that turned into a corner after a nice save by Gregor Kobel!
37′: Oof, a hard collision between Breel Embolo and Richie Laryea gives Nati a free kick from about 10 yards beyond the edge of the box. Switzerland has been the better team so far; can it convert?
35′: Are things getting spooky for Canada if it loses? That’s 2-0 for Bosnia and Herzegovina already! Remember, if the Dragons win and the Reds lose, and the European side overlooks a goal difference swing of nine goals, they will finish second in Group B ahead of Canada! Officially, it goes down as an own goal against Qatari defender Sultan Al Brake.
33′: Larin made a great run towards the left side of the box, but he hesitated instead of shooting on his first touch, and it wasn’t a huge challenge for Gregor Kobel on a dive to his right! That’s the second shot on target for the Reds.
31′: Granit Xhaka just kicked Cyle Larin in a poor challenge with minimal contact with the ball, and Larin fell to the turf. Both were hit with a yellow card.
30′: In Seattle, Bosnia and Herzegovina just scored! For now, the Dragons are in position to finish with four points in third! If Switzerland loses this game, it would still finish second because it holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Bosnia and Herzegovina, and if Canada loses, it’ll still finish ahead unless the Dragons can find a goal difference swing of another eight goals.
26′: The hydration break is over in both Vancouver and Seattle. Nati has remained the more aggressive team, which makes sense given that they’d finish second if this game ended in a draw, though Canada is starting to press high up the pitch. The group winner will play a third-place team in Groups E, F, G, I, or J, while the runner-up will play the runner-up in Group A (likely South Korea).
23′: The referee has whistled for the hydration break, bringing an ugly first “quarter” of action to an end! Pretty quiet stuff here in Vancouver. Meanwhile, it’s also 0-0 between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar at the hydration break, so as things stand, Canada would win the group on goal difference ahead of Switzerland, and both the Dragons and the Maroons would almost certainly be eliminated.
20′: That was the Reds’ first shot of the game! Tajon Buchanan’s effort from the right side of the box off of a set-piece didn’t really turn into much, but good to see Canada getting itself on the stat sheet. Can that be the spark that kicks this game into gear for Jesse Marsch’s men?
17′: Manzambi was the first to a deep through ball after an excellent run towards the right side of the pitch. He fell in the box, but his appeal for a penalty was denied.
13′: Wild sequence there, as Cyle Larin looked to be miles offside. The flag didn’t go up, and he attempted to deke Gregor Kobel, to no avail. Then, the flag eventually did go up! The offsides call clears Larin of his embarrassing effort on that chance..
11′: That was the first big chance of the game, as Breel Embolo shot it right at Maxime Crépeau after a well-timed run to the center of the box! A great save by Crépeau, and then Johan Manzabi’s follow-up was blocked!
5′: Switzerland won the first corner of the match, but it was immediately cleared out of danger by Nathan-Dylan Saliba.
1′: And we’re off here in Vancouver! What does this group decider have in store?
