The UFC will present its final PPV of the year, UFC 296: Edwards vs. Covington, on Saturday, December 16 from the T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The main event will be Leon Edwards defending the UFC welterweight championship against the No. 3 Colby Covington.

Edwards (21-3-1) will be making his second title defense. He won the championship at UFC 278 on August 20, 2022, with a dramatic fifth-round knockout over Kamaru Usman with 56 seconds remaining. Edwards was far behind on the scorecards and Usman looked to be in firm control in the final minutes of the fight until Edwards landed a head kick that knocked Usman out. They had a rematch in London at UFC 286 on March 18 and Edwards successfully retained by majority decision. Edwards also has wins over Nate Diaz and Rafael dos Anjos.

Covington (17-3) is an interesting case. He hasn’t fought since March 5, 2022, when he shut out Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. He has previously fought for the welterweight title, both times against Usman, and lost both fights — the first by fifth-round knockout and the second by a close unanimous decision. Covington has beaten a top-five welterweight in several years and his friendship with UFC president Dana White is used as a reference point of why “Chaos” tends to skip the line in the welterweight division. He has wins over former welterweight champions dos Anjos, Tyron Woodley, and Robbie Lawler.

Early lines at DraftKings Sportsbook had Edwards as a slight favorite at -130 while Covington is a +110 underdog.

The early preliminary card starts at 6 p.m. ET on UFC Fight Pass. The preliminary card is next up at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2/ESPN+. The big show gets started at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN+ PPV.
