Herbert Burns badly misses weight for bout with Daniel Pineda

The undefeated in UFC featherweight didn’t look so feathery on the scales today, and but his bank account will be lighter.

Sometimes the biggest fight for the Burns brothers in the UFC isn’t in the ring, but on the scale, and this time it’s the younger brother Herbert that falls short during a weigh-in. The 11-2 Brazilian with a 2-0 UFC mark via two first-round finishes came up big today, but not in the way you’d hope as a fighter.

Burns was supposed to hit 146 or less for UFC 252 Saturday night in Las Vegas, but hit the stage at 149.5 pounds, which will cost him some cash. Generally a miss that big will cost the offending fighter 30% of his purse, which will be forfeited to his opponent. Burns will also be ineligible for $50,000 fight night bonuses such as Performance of The Night or Fight of The Night.

Also TJ Brown missed at featherweight as well for his preliminary bout with Daniel Chavez. Brown came in at 146.5, a mere eight ounces over the 146 limit. He was one of the first to get on the scales during the two-hour weigh-in window, and looked a bit surprised that he had missed. But despite having two more hours to get the half-pound back, he was unable to make it. He’ll be fined 20% of his purse, which will go to Chavez, who Brown has publicly said he doesn’t think is very good.

Burns remains a -286 favorite over the +225 Pineda, and Brown is the -155 chalk to the +125 Chavez.
