UFC Fight Night on ESPN returns tonight, August 1st, to the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas. The headliner is two Top 10 middleweights in Derek Brunson vs. Edmen Shahbazyan. In the co-main event a pair of ranked women’s flyweights in Joanne Calderwood and Jennifer Maia do battle.

There are five fights on the main card and now four on the preliminary card that starts at 7:00 p.m. Ed Herman vs. Gerald Meerschaert was canceled just before the card began due to a positive Covid-19 test for Meerschaert, the second fight on the card that has been canceled after Markus Perez vs. Eric Spicely (and then replacement Charlie Ontiveros).

We’ll be tracking all the results tonight. Below you’ll find the winner, how they secured a victory, and adding gifs and video of exciting moments or stoppages where we can. Follow along throughout the evening!

Derek Brunson vs. Edmen Shahbazyan: Middleweight

Winner: Derek Brunson
Winning Method: Derek Brunson wins by TKO at :26 of Round 3.

A huge upset! The previously undefeated Shahbazyan falls for the first time in his first main event. The +300 underdog comes up huge and stops it as well. Brunson makes some noise and puts himself one step closer to a title shot.

And finally, this nightmare card is over. At least it ended with a quality fight!

Joanne Calderwood vs. Jennifer Maia: Women’s Flyweight

Winner: Jennifer Maia
Winning Method: Jennifer Maia wins by submission (armbar) at 4:29 of the first round.

Maia with some outstanding ground control to pull the upset.

Maia closed as a +167 underdog, but her doing it in the first round via submission is big shocker here. Maia was ranked #6 and Calderwood #3, those rankings might switch now, and now Maia cuts the line for a shot at Valentina Shevchenko’s belt when she returns from injury.

Vicente Luque vs. Randy Brown: Welterweight

Winner: Vicente Luque
Winning Method: Vicente Luque wins via TKO at 4:56 of the second round.

Randy Brown looked like he was about to ground himself, but he was held up by Luque to prevent him from getting a hand on the ground, and he ate a knee that did him in with just seconds left in the round.

Lando Vannata vs. Bobby Green: Lightweight

Winner: Bobby Green
Winning Method: Bobby Green wins by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27).

A complete performance by Green, who caps it by saying “I just paid off my house!” to the camera after his win. He won the fight 102-59 on significant strikes, and 3:05-0:27 on ground control. He also says he entered the fight with a fractured right hand, and will need some time off after his win.

Kevin Holland vs. Trevin Giles: Middleweight (CANCELED)

Getting ready the walk to the octagon, Giles passed out and the Nevada State Athletic Commission stopped the fight from happening. On a card full of last-minute replacements, weight misses, and even a failed Covid-19 test, this just adds to the chaos.

Frankie Saenz vs. Jonathan Martinez: Bantamweight

Winner: Jonathan Martinez
Winning Method: Jonathan Martinez wins by TKO at 0:57 of the third round.

Complete one-way traffic here as Martinez won on significant strikes 78-33, and the power behind those shots wasn’t close. Some of the kicks and knees were outstanding, and credit to Saenz for hanging on as long as he did.

Johnny Munoz vs. Nate Maness: Featherweight

Winner: Nate Maness
Winning Method: Nate Maness wins by unanimous decision (29-27, 29-27, 29-27).

A point deduction for low blows against Munoz canceled out his first round win, and the last two apparently went to Maness, He landed plenty more strikes 148-58, but actually landed less significant ones 42-17, and Munoz was in body control of his opponent 9:42-1:29. This one has judging controversy written all over it.

Jamall Emmers vs. Vince Cachero: Featherweight

Winner: Jamall Emmers
Winning Method: Jamall Emmers wins by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Emmers dominated the fight in all aspects, winning on significant strikes 103-62, and on ground control 5:47-0:28. Full credit to Cachero for taking the fight on short notice and taking an incredible amount of punishment and still coming, but this one was never in doubt. Add in the five takedowns and some passes for Emmers, and he’ll score in DFS as well.

Chris Gutierrez vs. Cody Durden: Bantamweight

Winner: Draw
Winning Method: Chris Gutierrez and Cody Durden is a unanimous draw (28-28, 28-28, 28-28).

It was an easy call here, as Durden won the first round with nearly all five minutes of ground control. But Gutierrez won the final two rounds mostly from his feet, but not in the dominating fashion as Durden won the first. The rare very obvious draw decision.
