The UFC is in Abu Dhabi for the next two weeks hosting four events at Fight Island. The series gets started on Saturday, July 11th with the UFC 251 PPV. The 13-fight card features championships on the line, and a huge women’s contenders bout. The early prelims get started at 6 p.m. on UFC Fight Pass, and the main card gets going at 10 p.m. on ESPN+.
The main event of the evening features welterweight champion Kamaru Usman facing off against recent replacement Jorge Masvidal. Usman was originally slated to face Gilbert Burns, but the latter tested positive for Covid-19 before the flight to Abu Dhabi. Burns has since been replaced by Masvidal.
This marks the first fight of 2020 for both fighters. Usman last fought in December 2019, beating Colby Covington via fifth round TKO at UFC 245. Usman is 16-1 and has won 15 straight fights since suffering a first round submission to Jose Caceres at CFA 11 in May 2013. Usman has won seven fights by knockout and one by submission.
Masvidal is back for his first fight since winning a third-round TKO over Nate Diaz last November at UFC 244. Masvidal is 35-13 over his lengthy career and has won his last three fights by KO or TKO. He has had some bad blood with Usman for a while, including a clash on Radio Row during the Super Bowl in the fighter’s mutual home of South Florida.
