UFC closes out its recent run of events at its Apex facility in Las Vegas this Saturday, June 27th, with UFC on ESPN 12. The organization and fighters will then head to “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi to put on four events over 16 days, starting July 11th. For this Apex event, the preliminary card of Saturday’s ESPN event includes a welterweight bout between Takashi Sato and Jason Witt.
This fight is a last minute change due to Covid-19. Sato was scheduled to face Ramiz Brahimaj, but the latter withdrew after one of his cornermen tested positive for the virus. Due to the late nature of the swap, the Nevada State Athletic Commission will allow Witt to weigh in separately from the rest of the fighters. He also still has to pass a Covid-19 test.
Witt is 15-5 in his career and is making his UFC debut. He has won seven of his last eight MMA bouts across a variety of promotions. He has finished seven fights by way of submission, two by TKO, and one by KO. He is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt.
Sato enters the bout with a 15-3 record, and 1-1 in his two UFC fights. Last September he Belal Muhammad submitted him in the third round of UFC 242 by way of a rear-naked choke. The April prior to that, Sato won his UFC debut with a second-round TKO of Ben Saunders at UFC Fight Night 150.
Weigh-in update: Takashi Sato weighed in at 170.5 pounds. Jason Witt weighed in at 171 pounds.
