MMA returns on Saturday, May 30th with UFC on ESPN 9. The 11-fight card gets underway at 6 p.m. ET, and is headlined by Tyrone Woodley vs. Gilbert Burns in a matchup of welterweight contenders.
The highlight of the six-fight preliminary card is a women’s flyweight contenders bout between Katlyn Chookagian and Antonina Shevchenko. Chookagian is the second-ranked flyweight, while Shevchenko ranked 12th in the division.
Chookagian, nicknamed “Blonde Fighter”, is 13-3 and coming off a third round TKO loss to Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 247 in February. And yes, Valentina is Antonina’s younger sister. Chookagian has won ten fights by decision, two by KO/TKO, and one by decision. Her three losses include the TKO loss in February and two decision losses. She is landing 4.11 significant strikes per minute, while absorbing 4.49.
Shevchenko is nicknamed Pantera and is 8-1. She has split her last two fights after winning seven straight across multiple promotions to open her career. She lost to Roxanne Modafferi via split decision at UFC Fight Night 149 in April of 2019, beat Lucie Puilova via second round technical submission on a rear-naked choke. She is landing 4.02 significant strikes per minute, while absorbing 2.37.
