Summer is here, and that means football season is upon us. A summer tradition unlike any other — grinding out research for football futures. I’ll have a series of my favorite NCAA Football futures releasing all the way up until the start of the season in late August and early September.
We need the Eagles to go a pedestrian 6-6 to lose this bet, and I just can’t see that happening. In fact, I’ll be pretty surprised if this one doesn’t move to 7.5 by the time the season starts, which the current juice suggests. Obviously, we want to get to eight or more wins here regardless of the number, but have the push on a 7-5 season in your back pocket always feels good.
BC finished 2020 at 6-5, but had some really narrow losses to high-end competition — a four-point loss to North Carolina that came down to the final play, a six-point loss to Clemson in which the Eagles led most of the game and a neck and neck game with Notre Dame that fell apart in the second half. Bottom line is this team can compete, and should be improved this year.
Phil Jurkovec isn’t just one of the top quarterbacks in the ACC, Phil Steele has BC ranked No. 7 in the nation when it comes to the QB position. Zay Flowers has the potential to be a big-time WR1 alongside Jurkovec, giving this offense an explosive ceiling.
Let’s shift attention to the schedule. You can’t argue that the Eagles are going to get off toa 3-0 start, and I’m going to give them 4-0 with a home game against Missouri. Clemson will be a loss, then for argument’s sake, I’m going to give BC the loss against NC State, despite that being a home game off a bye. Should be a coin flip game, so we’ll give it to the Wolfpack. BC is likely favored in five (and maybe even all six) of their remaining games against average to below average ACC teams. We just need another 4-2 stretch to finish the year to cash the win, but with no competition even close to Clemson, or as tough as NC State for that matter.
I nearly skipped over talking about BC with Phil on the Unreasonable Odds podcast because we were taking up so much time, but I’m glad I brought up the Eagles. Listen into the pod in the article for the full analysis, but Steele essentially said BC over seven wins is his favorite bet in the ACC. My favorite piece of analysis is that BC could be favored in as many as 10 games. With that info, I can’t pass on over seven.
