The final week of the regular season, in any sport, can be wacky for wagering. A team that is already in the playoffs with their seed locked up may rest key players, or a team that’s already eliminated may be inserting someone younger, less experienced into the lineup to see what he can do. Consequently, in order to have any success making money off the last weekend of the season, you need to have your finger on the pulse of everything.

Of course, that’s what I’m here for!

Lock No. 1: Let’s start with the Philadelphia Phoenix getting four at home against the Boston Glory. The Phoenix already won in Boston back in July, are coming off a competitive one-goal loss against New York and the Glory will be playing on the second night of a back-to-back. All these factors point to Philly, who are absolutely one of those teams looking to set the tone for future seasons with strong play down the stretch. Boston may still win the game, but I’d be very surprised if the Glory won by five. Take the points and thank me later.

Lock No. 2: I’m going with another home dog, the Los Angeles Aviators +1.5 against the San Jose Spiders (Editor’s note: The line has moved to a pick-em) . Frankly, another bizarre line, as the Aviators beat the Spiders up in the Bay Area four weeks ago. I understand that San Jose has won two straight and looked pretty good doing it, but let’s not get overly generous; both those wins are against the last place Seattle Cascades. Here’s another example of a favorite being on the second day of a back-to-back on the road. This would make sense perhaps if they are the superior team, but at best LA and San Jose are pretty close to even. And I think the Aviators could win this one outright.

Lock No. 3: Lastly, I feel obligated to again offer an opinion on the top Atlantic Division showdown of the week, with DC hosting Raleigh in a pick-em. Both teams are already in the playoffs, but coveted home field is at stake. In three previous meetings, the Breeze have prevailed in two one-point thrillers, while the Flyers won by two in overtime in the other. I fully expect this to be super close as well, within a point or two in the fourth quarter, but I’m going with the DC Breeze in large part because they are at home and their offense has been so steady throughout the season. I’m fully prepared to sweat this pick. That’s part of the fun.
