Our late Showdown matchup on Friday sees the Padres return to our lives, taking on the Rockies at home. Colorado actually comes in on a bit of a heater, while San Diego has recovered from a bit of a stumble, so there should be a lot of offense making for a great Showdown.
Plenty of fun is sure to ensue, so let’s get right into how to construct your DraftKings lineups for Friday night’s Showdown contest.

Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres
Captain’s Picks
Kyle Freeland ($15,000 CP) - This isn’t the most fun play in the world, but the Padres do rank just 17th in wRC+ against left-handed pitching and Freeland does come in on a bit of a roll. He didn’t quite back up his back-to-back seven-strikeout nights against the Cardinals, but he’s generally kept things under control in the past three outings and the improving strikeout numbers make him an interesting option. He’ll also be on the road, where he has better numbers over the course of his career.
Trent Grisham ($13,200 CP) - Grisham is really starting to feel it with two hits in each of the last three games, and he will get to face a left-hander here, which has actually proved fruitful. His .850 OPS against righties fails to meet the .891 OPS he has against lefties, and I’m still bullish on him despite the fact that he’ll hit fifth. If anything, it’ll give him more RBI opportunities. This is probably the safest option in San Diego’s order.

UTIL Plays
Ryan McMahon ($8,600) - McMahon is probably the Rockies’ best all-around hitter, and now he’ll face Reiss Knehr — a Fordham legend — who will be making his first career start and will be pitching above Double-A for the first time. McMahon owns a 47.7% hard-hit rate here, and judging by the fact that Knehr’s allowed a good amount of hits throughout his minor-league stay, I’d put my money on McMahon getting it in play plenty tonight. That should mean some damage.
Chris Owings ($5,200) - Owings couldn’t be stopped earlier this year prior to hitting the injured list, and he’s yet to get a real chance since being activated a couple of weeks ago. The fact is, his strong contact profile and gaudy walk rate make him an intriguing option at this price, even if he will be hitting eighth. You’ve seen him produce already this season, and taking a player at this price and at this level of the order, he can only exceed your expectations. He’ll be solid in GPPs.
Fades
Charlie Blackmon ($8,400) - Blackmon’s best days are behind him at this point, and even though he comes in in a bit of a hitting streak he hasn’t done real damage on his contact. Not enough to warrant this price tag, anyway. I mentioned Knehr will be inexperienced, but having seen him first-hand in college I can tell you his talent is real, and his strikeout numbers in college and throughout the minors were higher than you’d expect. I would imagine Blackmon won’t have such an easy go.
The Outcome
I think this should be a low-scoring game with Freeland finding success against a team that can’t hit lefties all that well and Knehr doing a decent enough job in his debut. I think the Padres will squeak out a win against the Rockies, a team that has found it tough to hit on the road this year (except, I guess, in Arizona).
Final Score: Padres 4, Rockies 3
