The Olympics have begun, and as usual, Team USA is a heavy favorite in Men’s basketball. They’ll get their first test on Sunday morning against France, and DraftKings Sportsbook has some enticing bets on the board.

USA vs. France

Let’s look at the four exhibition games Team USA played in Las Vegas. Outside of a 108-point outburst against Argentina, the U.S. really struggled to score — and those 108 came in a game following two losses, while the narrative about the team was extremely negative. In the three other contests, Team USA finished with totals of 87, 83 and 83, while allowing just over 84 points per game.
On the other side, France played five exhibition games and wasn’t able to top 79 points in any of them. France averaged 75.4 points during exhibition play, and the game totals stayed under 177 in all five contests. Looking at the Team USA roster, there are going to be some chemistry and fatigue issues. There were COVID protocol issues during training, so the roster had some turnaround. On top of that, Devin Booker, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday will all be joining the team for the first time. While that’s a good thing in the long run, those guys are coming off a tiring NBA Finals run and didn’t get a chance to gel with this team. This total feels about 10 points high.

Winner Without USA: Australia (+260)/Spain (+300)
Say what you want about the rough exhibition games for Team USA, there’s actually some value in betting them -320 to win gold when you consider some books opened them at -1000 to win it all. But I think there’s even more value in this new “winner without” market. Australia and Spain are veteran rosters scattered with legitimate NBA players that have a lot of experience playing on the international stage. It’s tough to imagine that one of these two teams doesn’t make it to the final against the U.S. I think there’s some value in tossing a half-unit on each and expecting to bring back some profit on one.
