This is the second game of the series between the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Madison Bumgarner is facing off against Antonio Senzatela. The temperature is expected to be around 60 degrees with clear skies and winds blowing in from left field at 10 mph. DraftKings Sportsbook has the total at a slate-high 11.5 runs. I think I’m going to stay away from the pitchers on this slate. Who’s with me?

Captain’s Picks
Trevor Story ($15,600 CP) - Bumgarner has a 6.02 xFIP for 2020-21. The strikeout rate has been 16.9% and the average exit velocity has been 92.8 mph. Against righties, the ISO has been .319 and the strikeout rate has been 13.9%. The hard hit rate has been 46.2%. Now he’s in Coors Field. Yummy or yuck, depending on the perspective. Against left-handed pitching, Story has a .225 ISO and 16% strikeout rate. 1 + 1 = 2. Now, it’s baseball and hitting is very difficult, but the situation is favorable.
Christian Walker ($14,400) - Senzatela is a ground ball pitcher and doesn’t miss bats. He had a K/9 of 5.03 last season and a swinging strike rate of 8.1%. Right-handed batters have a .158 ISO against him with an average exit velocity of 90.8 mph. Walker has had reverse splits throughout his career, hitting .260/.332/.471 against righties as opposed to .228/.332/.440 against lefties. Now he’s in Coors Field.
Value Plays
Garrett Hampson ($6,200) - Hampson will likely be batting second in the lineup. He’s not the highest average or OBP player, but he’s got a little bit of pop in the bat and some speed on the base paths. Did I mention that he’s batting second in front of Trevor Story? That’s a good place to be. So far on the young season, Hampson has four hits (two doubles) with three runs scored, four RBI, and he’s walked twice.
C.J. Cron ($7,800) - Cron has mashed lefties throughout his career, posting a slash of .271/.321/.490. Bumgarner has allowed a .319 ISO against righties and posted a strikeout rate of 13.9%. This could be the game Cron gets off the home run schneid.
Fades
Madison Bumgarner ($15,900 CP; $10,600) - The career numbers at Coors Field look good for Bumgarner: a 3.29 ERA and a .299/.342/.470 slash isn’t bad. 15 home runs allowed in 17 games is magnifique. With that said, most of that production came when Bumgarner was dominant. He’s a far cry from that level now and he hasn’t pitched in Coors Field since 2019, when he was a member of the Giants and still able to throw over 90 mph on his fastball. Fine, that was a low blow but you get the gist. He’s the highest-priced player on the slate and is coming off a performance against the Padres in which he allowed six earned runs to finish the day with a measly 2.4 DKFP.
The Outcome
It’s Coors Field with two mediocre pitchers on the mound. There should be fireworks like there usually are. I do think that Bumgarner is a better pitcher than Senzatela and that the Diamondbacks have a better bullpen, but I like the Rockies to break their four-game losing streak with the offense leading the way.
Final Score: Rockies 10, Diamondbacks 7
