Fantasy Hockey Cheat Sheet: Top DraftKings NHL DFS Picks, Lineup Strategy for April 21

Neil Parker gives his top NHL picks and lineup advice for Wednesday’s fantasy hockey slate on DraftKings, which starts at 7:00 p.m. ET.

It’s a quiet four-game slate in the NHL on Wednesday, and it’s a particularly shallow player pool. Expect the top players from Edmonton and Vegas to be popular targets, and the Golden Knights are the lone notable favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Top Line Stacks

Golden Knights vs. Sharks

Max Pacioretty ($8,400) - Chandler Stephenson ($4,700) - Mark Stone ($7,000)

This is a favorable matchup for the Golden Knights, with the Sharks losing six games in a row and allowing the sixth most goals per game in the league this season. Vegas’ No. 1 line has also clicked for 5.81 goals per 60 minutes this season and has 10 tallies and 13 helpers through the past five games. Plus, Stephenson, Pacioretty and Stone also all skate together on the No. 1 power-play unit.

Oilers vs. Canadiens

Leon Draisaitl ($8,900) - Connor McDavid ($9,100) - Jesse Puljujarvi ($4,200)

With eight goals and 12 assists through the past five games, McDavid, Draisaitl and Puljujarvi are up to an elite 6.18 goals per 60 minutes for the campaign. While they’re likely to be popular targets, Puljujarvi helps keep the cap hit in check. Montreal also enters in poor form with just three wins and 3.5 goals against per game through its past 10 matchups.

Superstar to Build Around

Patrick Kane, CHI vs. NSH ($8,200) - With most of the top options discussed above, Kane stands out as one of the only high-end producers left in the shallow player pool. Although, he’s probably more of a contrarian target Wednesday. Nashville has held Kane to three assists through six meetings this season, and the Predators are allowing just 1.89 goals per game during their current 14-5 surge. Still, Kane has collected eight points — two goals — through his past seven games and ranks third in the scoring race with 57 points for the season.

Value on Offense

Alex Tuch, VGK vs. SJ ($4,400) - As noted, this checks out as a favorable matchup for Vegas, and Tuch enters in solid form. He’s scored three goals, added an assist and registered 21 shots through the past five games, and the 24-year-old winger receives a slight boost skating with veterans Jonathan Marchessault ($5,600) and William Karlsson ($4,800) on the second line.

Ryan Johansen, NSH at CHI ($3,200) - With just five points — only one goal — through the past 15 games, there’s not too much to be excited about with Johansen. However, he remains in a top-line role and skates with the No. 1 power-play unit, so he’s positioned to succeed. Additionally, the Blackhawks have allowed a healthy 3.09 goals per game and have the sixth worst penalty-kill percentage in the league.

Stud Goalies

Marc-Andre Fleury, VGK vs. SJ ($8,400) - If you’re looking to spend up in goal, Fleury is your target. He’s won three straight with just four goals against to improve to a 20-10 record, .925 save percentage and 2.09 GAA for the campaign. Vegas is also the largest DraftKings Sportsbook favorite on the docket, has the fewest goals against per game in the league and boasts a second-ranked 85.5% penalty-kill percentage.

Juuse Saros, NSH at CHI ($7,800) - Considering Saros has allowed two goals or fewer in 13 of his past 15 starts, it’s surprising to see his salary this low. After all, the Preds are rolling along the noted hot stretch, and Saros boasts an elite .951 save percentage and 1.59 GAA during the 15-game run. Chicago has also only scored eight goals through six games against the Preds this season.

Value on Defense

Wyatt Kalynuk, CHI vs. NSH ($2,700) - The rookie is an overachiever and had collected two goals, an assist, nine shots and five blocks through four games before exiting Monday’s contest early with a hip injury. He was on the ice for Wednesday’s morning skate, so as long as Kalynuk suits up Wednesday night, he’s a low-salary flier with modest upside.

Power-Play Defenseman

Roman Josi, NSH vs. CHI ($6,900) - The Nashville captain offers a high fantasy ceiling and has recorded 12 points, 36 shots and 23 blocks while logging 23:25 of ice time (2:21 with the man advantage) through his past 15 games. As noted, it’s not a daunting matchup against the Blackhawks, either.

Shea Theodore, VGK vs. SJ ($6,000) - With the noted soft matchup against San Jose, look for Theodore to turn in another solid showing. He’s recorded six helpers through his past five games and respectively ranks fourth and second in points and shot attempts per 60 minutes among regular defensemen. He projects as a high-floor, high-ceiling target.
