Who will have a better seed?

This is a really tough call to start with, and both of these teams are could potentially land a No. 3 or No. 4 seed. Had Kansas fallen to UTEP this week, the answer would be easy. It’s going to come down to who goes deeper in conference tournament play, but I think selecting a tie might cover the most outcomes. A bad loss from either team would provide a clear edge for the other.

Tie — But, be ready to adjust if a team has a bad loss.

Which of the following team will make the tournament?

Utah State

Two or more

The blue bloods listed here are out — Indiana has absolutely no shot and letting Duke in would be a crime based on brand name. Utah State is right on the bubble, but on the outside looking in, in my opinion. That leaves us with Xavier, who really could’ve used a win over the weekend to help its chances. The Musketeers have to win at least one, maybe two conference tournament games.

Xavier or None — Based on how Xavier does in conference tournament play this week.

Which of the following teams will miss the tournament?

Michigan State

Georgia Tech

Colorado State

Two or more

Michigan State, UConn and Georgia Tech have done their parts to be firmly in the field. That leaves us with CSU or none. I have the Rams in the field now, and all they have to do is not have a bad loss in their conference tournament to remain in the field.

Will Tennessee’s seed be better or worse than 6.5?

Tennessee is a team that I’ll be looking to fade in the big dance. That said, I have to be objective, and resume probably has them as a 6-seed. I’d give the Vols a better shot at being a 5-seed than a 7-seed, so this one is a relatively easy call in a very competitive SEC conference.

Better — Unless Tennessee loses its first game in the SEC tournament

Which conference will have more teams in the tournament?

BIG 12

While it’s been a great year for the SEC, this probably comes down to the fate of Ole Miss, who I don’t think will get in. Assuming that’s the case, the seven teams from the Big 12 should be enough to have the edge.

BIG 12

Which conference will have more teams in the tournament?

Atlantic 10

Both conferences almost certainly have two bids — VCU and St. Bonaventure from the A-10, and Houston and Wichita State from the AAC. SMU and Saint Louis do sit as bubble teams, so if one were two get in, that’d be the tipping point. But both schools are pretty far down the bubble, so this one should be a comfortable tie.

How many No. 1 seeds will the Big Ten have?

Over 1.5

Under 1.5

This one is almost no longer a question. Illinois had an amazing week, and leapfrogged Michigan in the seeding. Despite two losses this week, one to Illinois, Michigan is still comfortably a one-seed. It feels like we know all four top seeds at this point, and two of them are from the Big Ten.

Over 1.5

How many Big Ten teams will make the tournament?

Over 9.5

Under 9.5

It’s been an amazing season for this conference, but getting nine teams in is still a tremendous accomplishment. This was going to come down to teams like Indiana, who we already covered, and Minnesota, who have both choked their seasons away. Nine teams firmly in the field, but tough to imagine a 10th at this point.

Under 9.5

How many ACC teams will make the tournament?

Over 6.5

Under 6.5

Tough year for the ACC, who seems to have a few of the top names on the bubble. Five or six teams are in the field, but it’s going to come down to a big-name school that just doesn’t have the resume receiving the benefit of the doubt. While going against a Syracuse or Duke team to get in could backfire, I have to trust the committee to do the right thing. Neither of those teams has done enough.

Under 6.5

How many Big East teams will make the tournament?

Over 4.5

Under 4.5

The Big East has three locks for the tournament, then it comes down to Xavier and Seton Hall. In the earlier bubble section, I gave Xavier a good chance to get in. But even if I am right, it looks like Seton Hall is out right now, crumbling a big game away on Saturday.

Under 4.5
