Fantasy Hockey Cheat Sheet: Top DraftKings NHL DFS Picks, Lineup Strategy for March 24

Neil Parker gives his top NHL picks and lineup advice for Wednesday’s fantasy hockey slate on DraftKings, which starts at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The featured NHL contests on DraftKings consist of the three night games beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET, and it’s important to note the Edmonton-Montreal clash has been postponed. Pittsburgh is the largest DraftKings Sportsbook favorite on the docket followed by Winnipeg and San Jose. Additionally, the Sabres-Penguins and Jets-Canucks tilts have the highest over/under totals.

Top Line Stacks

Penguins vs. Sabres

Jake Guentzel ($7,600) - Sidney Crosby ($7,700) - Bryan Rust ($6,400)

Jets at Canucks

Kyle Connor ($6,500) - Pierre-Luc Dubois ($4,800) - Nikolaj Ehlers ($6,700)

This is a risk-reward line, as Dubois, Connor and Ehlers have combined for six tallies, seven helpers and five multi-point showings through the past five games, but they’ve also missed the scoresheet entirely eight times. With Vancouver allowing a healthy 3.17 goals per game, there’s potential for Dubois, Connor and Ehlers, and especially at 5-on-5. Vancouver surrenders the second most high-danger scoring chances per hour, has the eighth lowest Corsi For percentage since Feb. 1, and Winnipeg’s second line has driven possession with a 56.1 mark through the past five games.

Superstar to Build Around

Anze Kopitar, LA at SJ ($6,500) - Look for a rebound showing from Kopitar after the Sharks held the center off the scoresheet on Monday. Kopitar has still collected 16 points through his past 12 games and is the midst of a throwback season with 37 points through 33 games, including 21 with the man advantage. San Jose checks out as a soft matchup, too. The Sharks have surrendered the fourth most goals per game in the league and have an underwhelming 79.1% penalty-kill percentage.

Value on Offense

Tomas Hertl, SJ vs. LA ($4,900) - Through seven games since returning from injury, Hertl has collected two goals and five assists and reached double-digit fantasy points in five of those games. The Kings have also allowed the fourth most high-danger scoring chances per 60 minutes at 5-on-5, so the matchup should produce some opportunities for Hertl.

Sam Reinhart, BUF at PIT ($4,000) - The 25-year-old winger snapped a five-game point drought last time out, and Reinhart is locked into a top offensive role, which makes this salary a bit of a bargain. Additionally, he shouldn’t be a popular target, and the Penguins sport a 23rd-ranked 75.8% penalty-kill percentage.

Stud Goalies

Tristan Jarry, PIT vs. BUF ($8,300) - As noted, the Sabres are a favorable opponent with their last win coming Feb. 23. Jarry has also rounded into excellent form with a 10-4-1 record, .927 save percentage and 2.39 GAA through his past 15 starts. Even with the steep salary, Jarry is likely to be a popular goalie target Wednesday. If Casey DeSmith ($8,300) receives the starting nod, he’s also a strong option.

Connor Hellebuyck, WPG at VAN ($8,200) - The reigning Vezina Trophy winner is coming off a 22-save shutout over the Canucks, and Vancouver could be without both top-six centers after Bo Horvat ($6,300) left Monday’s game. While there’s definitely some hit and miss in his game, Hellebuyck offers contest-winning upside and has made 30 saves or more in 11 of 25 starts this season.

Value on Defense

Neal Pionk, WPG at VAN ($4,900) - Currently reeling along a five-game point drought, Pionk is a breakout candidate in the noted soft matchup. He racked up an impressive 23 points through the first 27 games of the season, and Pionk’s 1.92 points per 60 minutes ranks 10th among regular defensemen this year.

Rasmus Dahlin, BUF at PIT ($3,500) - Another Sabres player with a low salary to consider, Dahlin has missed the scoresheet in six consecutive games. His current 1.05 points per 60 minutes is lagging well behind last year’s 2.11 mark, so there’s likely some positive regression ahead — even if it’s only modest. As noted, this is a favorable power-play matchup for Buffalo, and Dahlin quarterbacks the No. 1 unit.

Power-Play Defenseman

Kris Letang, PIT vs. BUF ($6,800) - Another option to throw into a Pittsburgh stack, Letang is in a bit of a cold funk and missed the scoresheet in three of the past four games. As noted, this is a soft matchup and perfect opportunity for him to have a strong showing. He registered six shots last time out and offers an excellent cross-category profile with 22 points, 76 shots and 41 blocks while averaging 24:39 — 3:14 on the power play — through 31 games this season.

Quinn Hughes, VAN vs. WPG ($4,700) - The Jets surrender the most high-danger scoring chances per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 in the league and have a middling 78.9% penalty-kill percentage, so both the matchup and salary check out for Hughes. His 2.1 points per 60 minutes ranks sixth among all regular defensemen over the past two seasons, so there’s definite value here.
