The way the pool works is you basically pick one team each day to win while the tournament is going on, but you want to save the better teams for deeper in the tournament. This starts off somewhat easy, picking first-round winners that you feel don’t have a chance to go all the way, but this is going to get difficult very quickly. You may only pick each team once per entry, and if your pick wins, you advance.

Friday, March 19 Considerations
Again, the goal here is to pick the easiest winner possible. So we want to target teams we think have the best chance to win their first-round game, but aren’t interested in using again due to their path. Colgate had a terrific season, and this should be a fun game, but Arkansas is going to be too much and should get a real game from Texas Tech in the next round.
2 Ohio State over 15 Oral Roberts
This probably isn’t my favorite Friday option, but at least one worth considering. The Buckeyes gave it everything they had in the Big Ten, making it all the way to OT of the championship. They could be a bit shorthanded early in the tournament, but will have no issue with Oral Roberts. I could still see a Sweet Sixteen or even an Elite Eight run here, though, so maybe hang onto them. But if you want to pull the trigger, this is a Day One winner.
2 Houston over 15 Cleveland State
Houston is a pretty intriguing one, as I have no long-term interest here, but its the largest 2-seed favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook, sitting around 20 points. This might be my favorite pick for Friday, as they will have no problem running through Cleveland State. But after that, the road gets tough quick. I have no interest in using a survivor pick on Houston anywhere past this matchup, making them the perfect play.

Saturday, March 20 Considerations
4 Florida State over 13 UNC Greensboro
Florida State is a team I have no interest in backing long-term in this tournament. They have all the talent in the world, but can’t always put it together in big games. While the Seminoles should make it past UNCG, I think they could easily be upset in the second round. As an 11.5-point favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook, FSU is by far the shortest favorite I’m writing up. That likely leaves better options for us.
2 Iowa over 15 Grand Canyon
Iowa is one of those perfect options because I see almost no shot they lose in the first round, but they have a very difficult path after that. The Hawkeyes will advance past Grand Canyon, but after that, Oregon could take them out in the next round. Even further, they are in the same bracket as Gonzaga, limiting upside.
Not sure if you want to burn a 1-seed this early or not, but Michigan will be tested out of the gate. With Isaiah Livers out, one of their best scoring options is out, which will impact the Wolverines in a second-round matchup. They are still good enough to go deep, but I’ll never feel comfortable backing them. This is a decent spot to take an early W.
