I guess I could figure out a way to fact-check this (I won’t), but it feels like we’re more than two full weeks into the MLB season and tonight’s 13-game featured slate on DraftKings is our first “normal” DFS schedule of 2020. We’ve got almost every team in the league featured, there hasn’t been any preemptive postponements and the slate’s actually due to begin just past 7 p.m. ET. Throw in a glut of questionable starting pitching and a few weather concerns and it almost seems like a regular evening of baseball.

With so many teams active on Friday, you’ll need to figure out where to focus your attention when it comes to stacking. In that aspect, I’ve got your back. Let’s roll through tonight’s top five MLB stacks.

1. Minnesota Twins

Among all qualified pitchers in baseball last season, Jakob Junis ($7,300) allowed the sixth-most home runs per nine (1.59) and the eighth-most batted ball events of over 95 mph (221). So, it wouldn’t exactly be going out on a limb to suggest that the right-hander has had his struggles with limiting opposing hitters; specifically RHBs. Junis exhibited reverse-splits in 2019, surrendering a whopping 1.89 HR/9 in right-on-right matchups - the direct result of a 0.94 GB/FB ratio when facing said righties. If that wasn’t enough of a draw, after being limited to just 64 pitches back on Aug. 2, it would seem that Junis isn’t fully stretched out. That means mid-inning relievers, which usually means good things for an opponent.

2. San Diego Padres

We haven’t seen a lot of Luke Weaver ($8,000). Once a relatively highly-touted prospect, injuries have limited the 26-year-old to just over 300 innings of work dating back to 2016. Still, he’s healthy now and he’s throwing harder than he’s ever thrown in his life. That would seem to be good news, yet opposing hitters have completely destroyed Weaver through two outings in 2020. To wit, Weaver’s allowed three home runs and 12 earned runs in a mere 7.1 innings of work. It’s not like the advanced stats tell a different story, either. Among the 101 pitchers with at least 25 BBEs this season, the RHP is conceding a league-worst 95.4 mph average exit velocity. In fact, that leads every arm in that grouping by over 2 mph. Not great, Luke.

3. Los Angeles Dodgers

As someone who grew up watching him catch touchdown passes at Notre Dame, this is hard for me to say, but: Jeff Samardzija ($6,400) is getting old. It’s not looking like it’s going to be a graceful process, either. The 35-year-old is averaging negative DKFP through his first two outings of the season, mostly due to having generated more opponent home runs (3) than strikeouts (2) across 9.2 innings on the mound. To be fair, Samardzija has apparently been dealing with a blister issue in 2020, however, in my experience, that doesn’t exactly disappear magically in the four days between starts. To make matters worse, Samardzija’s been eaten alive by LHBs the past half-decade and the Dodgers have some great ones in their lineup.

4. Atlanta Braves

Remember last season when the Phillies couldn’t hold a lead to save their lives because of an absolutely terrible bullpen? Well, maybe things aren’t all that different in 2020 after all. Philadelphia comes into Friday’s matchup with Atlanta with its relievers possessing a hideous and league-worst 7.89 ERA. Yes, due to postponements, it’s across a smaller sample than most pitching staffs, but the point remains. Combine that area of weakness with Vince Velasquez ($6,900) - who has maintained a 4.99 ERA and an opponent .342 wOBA dating back to the beginning of 2017 - and you can see why the Braves are in a pretty great spot on this massive slate.

5. Toronto Blue Jays

It should be noted that the Jays currently own an ugly 75 wRC+ as a team and at times it has looked like Charlie Montoya has sent his hitters to the batter’s box blindfolded, but the presence of Ryan Weber ($5,300) is enough to forget all that. The right-hander possesses a bloated 13.2% barrels per plate appearance ratio through a pair of outings - the highest mark of any American League pitcher with at least 25 BBEs to his name. Weber’s also yet to muster a single strikeout, despite the fact he’s faced 38 hitters to this point in 2020. Allowing that kind of launch angle with that level of consistent contact is about as dangerous a combination that exists for a starter.
